Not their iPad to sell

Long backstory, money grabbing relatives took advantage of my family member and spent all her money, family member passed and we never got back the personal items of the family member...
They sold an iPad of the family member that was linked to my mums iCloud account and deleted everything and couldn’t be retrieved- pictures of the relative, daughters wedding and baby picture/ and of late brother.
I have put on lost mode and now getting messages ... family member have sold the iPad.
Here’s the AIBU..
Do I restore the iPad and let the new owners have it or see if some comeback trouble comes to the money grabbing relatives that sold what wasn’t theirs to sell??

Hope that makes sense ....
help!

Do nowt and let thieving relatives manage the fallout...

DantesInferno · 06/05/2019 17:40

This isn't even a question surely you leave it as lost/stolen

Why would you even think you shouldn't?

Redglitter · 06/05/2019 17:42

Theres nothing to think about. It wasn't theirs to sell definitely leave it as lost/stolen. Let them sort it out

Willowkoko · 06/05/2019 17:46

What’s the relation here? Hard to judge if they think they are entitled to the iPad over you...

If you truly believe it to have been stolen, then definitely leave it on stolen. However, unfortunately it is far too easy to wipe and refresh as a new iPad these days.

It’s only easy if you know the passwords
How have they removed the iCloud ? They must have known the password. If it’s activation locked you need proof of purchase.

Milly345 · 06/05/2019 17:52

We don’t want it back it’s the point wasn’t theirs to sell

The iCloud was still on the iPad when sold

All the photos etc should still be in the cloud - and not on the device . So
If you log in on a different device then you still have them.
Up to you whether you want to unlock it or not - it’s useless to them if you can’t.

Milly345 · 06/05/2019 18:16

My mum never had her phone on back up mode. And when you delete on a device it deletes it from the iCloud anyways - my mum has no back ups on her phone . It’s gutting for her.

OP posts:
KenDoddsDadsDog · 06/05/2019 18:19

It keeps it on iCloud if you delete it , as long as you’ve backed up though. That’s a gutter for her Sad
Families are shit sometimes , we were only speaking to friends about a similar scenario yesterday.

Milly345 · 06/05/2019 18:21

They spent all her money and ran up a credit card of 11k too. You really can’t chose your family

Does it not back up when you charge? How did they use a cc if she had died - it should be frozen from the date of death. If your dm links to the account the items from ipad should be there.

Milly345 · 06/05/2019 18:29

It’ was spent while she was alive and in hospital.
I can imagine she agreed them to use it to cover some food and petrol but not hundreds on takeaways hundreds in cash withdrawn and hundreds spent in sainsbury and Tesco’s every couple of days ....

ChinaBear · 06/05/2019 18:33

I’d leave it in lost mode and set the on screen message to say this iPad is stolen. Let the relatives deal with the fall out.

ChinaBear · 06/05/2019 18:34

And get a solicitor to review the £11k expenditure as it’s clearly fraudulent!

Abbazed · 06/05/2019 18:55

Did they have poa
