AIBU to think these phone calls might be malicious?

Started last week ... unknown number calls my mobile. I answer and they ask if I’d just called their number. I say no. They apologise and end call. Happened again later the same day but thinking about it, why ring me on a withheld number if they think I’ve already been calling them?? Anyway it happened a few times over the weekend, same voice, bloke with local accent.
It’s just happened again now.

I’m not usually the paranoid type but I’m worried this could be something personal? I have no enemies as far as I know

I would be suspicious too I had someone ring my phone asking for lisa I said wrong number few phone calls later I tell them to get to fuck then my door gets banged is lisa in? Same fucking person my neighbour's heard my response (I'm normally nice really)

StickyBlisteredAnus · 06/05/2019 10:02

When they rang this morning they said “someone keeps calling my number” which can’t be true as I have my phone on me all the time!

I wouldn't go malicious route. If I was calling back to an unknown number I'd block mine because I wouldn't know who I'm calling.

Block the number and don't worry about it.

StickyBlisteredAnus · 06/05/2019 10:04

I can’t block the number as they withhold it when they ring me

Can't block an Unknown number

jellyfrizz · 06/05/2019 10:08

I had this for a couple of days then it stopped.

Apparently scammers can use random mobile numbers as a mask for their real number (because many people won’t answer a call from countries with a rep for scam calls). People who missed the call will then call back the number it looked like the call came from -i.e. yours.

Burlea · 06/05/2019 10:10

I don't answer unknown numbers. If they are desperate to contact me they can leave a message and I will phone back.

JuniFora · 06/05/2019 10:12

Don't answer unknown numbers.

Aquamarine1029 · 06/05/2019 10:12

Never answer unknown numbers. If it's someone legitimate they can leave a message.

StickyBlisteredAnus · 06/05/2019 10:15

I have to as I am involved with social services who always call in with held numbers and can’t leave a message due to confidentiality.

My concern is that a friend of mine is with a dodgy bloke and she talks to me about him all the time. He has form for manipulation, lying and controlling behaviour. I’ve told her to leave him loads of times and I worry it could be something to do with him.

The next time they ring say as they're withholding their number you can't confirm wether you've rung them because you don't know their number. But as it's happening a lot you've reported it to police as you're concerned and suggest they do the same. Hopefully they'll leave you alone after that.

TeaStory · 06/05/2019 10:32

It sounds like your number has been spoofed.

PickettBowtruckles · 06/05/2019 10:37

Phone your provider. I once had several missed calls from different mobile numbers. Went through calling each one back saying I’d had missed calls from them, each person denied calling me. Then I got another call which I answered, and it was someone saying they’d missed a call from me! I was with Vodafone and called them and they said they’d had lots of calls about this that morning and clearly something was going wrong and basically just to not answer any more calls and they were working on it. It never happened again but it seemed to affect a lot of customers judging by their twitter that day 😂

spugzbunny · 06/05/2019 10:41

This may seem like a stupid question but is it a very realistic recording? It could be a marketing ploy. Like that annoying woman who answers 'hello, hello, can you hear me' and it's actually a recording.

Charley34 · 06/05/2019 12:34

You can block withheld numbers go to phone/call settings it's in there I had to do the same all withheld/private numbers go start to voicemail if not dodgy will leave message

ALongHardWinter · 06/05/2019 13:18

Agree with previous posters who said that they don't answer withheld numbers. I'm of the opinion that if it's important either leave a message and I'll get back to you,or text me.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 06/05/2019 13:43

Don't pick up any further calls from withheld numbers.

If it is a harrasser, they'll get bored of arguing with silence. And if any voicemail messages are left you will then have a record of the harrassment. Save any messages.

AnnieMay100 · 06/05/2019 13:49

I had this a few years ago, turned out someone dodgy had a similar number to me and changed last few digits to my number. I changed the number in the end as the calls were 5-10 times a day. As they have your address too I’d say it’s someone you know, report it just so it’s logged.

AnnieMay100 · 06/05/2019 13:52

Sorry ignore last bit just re read they don’t have your address
