To research the local take aways before I order

We’ve just moved house to a new area. Can’t be bothered to cook tonight so thought we’d treat ourselves to a Chinese takeaway.

DH expects me to order from the one he assumes is the closest as we’ve driven past it

I just had a look online for the local Chinese takeaways and ruled out that one as it had 3.5 stars on google reviews whereas many had 4.5 so I have ordered from one of those

I also took a view based on which one I liked the look of and whether they looked clean

Am I being weird?

I know DH will think it odd when he realises I didn’t just order from the closest (not there was much difference in distance)

No that's not odd at all Hmm

Grumpbum123 · 04/05/2019 19:10

Nope I’m obsessed with food hygiene ratings and won’t order from anyone with less than a 5

Pppppppp1234 · 04/05/2019 19:11

I go by just eat reviews and star ratings from there as a starting block... and their hygiene ratings 🙈🙈

RedSheep73 · 04/05/2019 19:11

If the one you chose is close enough to deliver for free, no I don't think that's strange.

Fantasisa · 04/05/2019 19:11

Not at all. Local Facebook groups are full of recommendations usually. Although we’ve been where we are for three years and both of our usual Chinese and Indian takeaways are a bit hit and miss. Report back!

flyingspaghettimonster · 04/05/2019 19:12

Not weird at all. I tend to use grub hub for our take aways and always read reviews first. Our chinese takes over an hour to get cooked and delivered to us, but at least it is tollerably edible compared to the closest places.

BetsyBigNose · 04/05/2019 19:14

Well you're certainly not alone (so YANBU) if my city's Facebook group is anything to go by - the most regularly asked question is "Which is the best Chinese/Indian/Thai/Fish & Chips in City?" It must be posted 25 times a week!

TinyGhostWriter · 04/05/2019 19:14

Not weird at all.

I even have a look at the food hygiene ratings for takeaways before I order.

AliceRR · 04/05/2019 19:17

Thanks! I was sure someone would tell me u was really strange 😃

The one I ordered from was not much further than the closest (less than half a mile in it probably but in the next village rather than the closest village IYSWIM)

There were two that looked nice and clean and had good reviews but don’t deliver

45 min wait on food apparently so I’ll keep you posted!

Surely we try them all to find the best one anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️ (unless this one is really good)

Not odd at all. In addition to research I will also only order from those our friend (who is a professional pest controller) will himself order from.

AliceRR · 04/05/2019 19:20

I even have a look at the food hygiene ratings for takeaways before I order.

I should have done this!

Not unreasonable or strange! Who wants crap food and / or food poisoning?! One of the perils of moving house is finding a decent takeaway in your new area. Good luck!

ISpeakJive · 04/05/2019 19:29

I do this all the time OP and I ALWAYS check the hygiene rating!
I will never order if it’s below a 4!

Evilspiritgin · 04/05/2019 19:29

If only they did spot checks of takeaways, in my area they are told in advance when they are coming, a good friends dh is a plumber and had said some of the 5 star kitchens are horrendous and they only clean properly when council gives word.

You can also lose stars structural damage as well as lack of confidence in management

AnotherExWife · 04/05/2019 19:32

Not odd at all. I ordered from one close to where I live and both me and my daughter were sick. I looked at the food hygiene rating and it was a 1!!! I always check now before ordering and will only order if they have 4 or 5 stars.

AliceRR · 04/05/2019 19:48

Take away was quite good!

Nice enough I would order again but not so fantastic I am an exclusive customer

(Actually think the takeaway near our old house might have been better)

Stravapalava · 04/05/2019 21:01

We get our Indian and Chinese takeaways from the next village, which we sometimes have to collect. This despite there being quite a few places much nearer to us. But it's worth it as they are amazing!

Michaelbaubles · 04/05/2019 21:03

There are three Chinese takeaways in my town. When someone on Facebook asks which is the best, the first three answers are always:

  1. takeaway no 1
  2. takeaway no 2
  3. takeaway no 3

So helpful! I still don’t know which is the best!

AliceRR · 04/05/2019 21:36

@Stravapalava Theres a really nice Indian grill we love and it was just a bit too far to get delivery to where we lived. I’m now wondering now whether it’s a bit closer to here 🤔

@Michaelbaubles I don’t understand 🙄

OP posts:
Closetbeanmuncher · 04/05/2019 21:43

I always look at reviews and hygiene ratings, thought everyone did BlushGrin

Not unreasonable at all....who wants to eat something that tastes like garbage cooked in a filthy kitchen??

Leeds2 · 04/05/2019 21:48

You really need to taste them all!

Personally, I would choose the ones that do home delivery.

Bunbunbunny · 04/05/2019 21:48

Yanbu Joe Lycet shows exactly why you should check! He got his kitchen in a skip approved for uber eats

AliceRR · 04/05/2019 22:51

@Leeds2 Well all the ones that don’t look questionable but yes!

@Bunbunbunny Thanks. That was really interesting!

Must say I try to avoid uber ears and just eat as I’ve used them a couple of tiles and food is cold!

What do you think the point of reviews are? This has to be the daftest aibu of the day

ilovesooty · 05/05/2019 03:03

No it's not daft. I've seen far drafter AIBU threads than this. Dana28 wind your neck in.

I moved house last year and I've spent quite a lot of time researching the best takeaways.
