to think these are weird questions?

I had a job interview last week, quite a standard and basic question set, until the end when the interviewer asked me if I was married. She then asked if I have a partner, and if 'they' were a he or a she. Then, she asked if I have any children.

I don't have kids, but I feel these questions were odd. Is this just polite conversation, AIBU to think these questions are strange? Being a woman of a certain age, I worry employers are put off hiring me as they think I will get pregnant at any moment and go off on maternity leave. I know it's against the law to discriminate, but I'm sure companies still do it.

I thought they weren't supposed to ask that, maybe the kids would affect you as an employee but not married/partner.

mummyhaschangedhername · 04/05/2019 19:12

I didn't think they could ask those types of questions.

If you are in the UK then that is illegal.

PurpleFox1 · 04/05/2019 19:21

Jimmers · 04/05/2019 19:23

Yep, illegal to even ask.

rightsideofherstory · 04/05/2019 22:17

Totally illegal

SweetestSugar · 04/05/2019 22:33

Illegal to ask those questions in the UK

CloserIAm2Fine · 04/05/2019 22:37

Given it’s illegal to discriminate on sexual orientation, any employer who is stupid enough to ask that kind of question is opening themselves up to a lawsuit. Even if it has no bearing on the decision (in which case why ask at all?), they’d be hard pressed to prove it because there’s simply no legitimate reason for them to ask.
