To ask how often your newborn..

I don't know if I'm just fretting for nothing but DS1 poos literally all the time and I'm worried something is wrong. He's 4 days old and he often poos during a feed or will poo straight after a nappy change.

Could this be an indication that his milk isn't agreeing with him? He's on cow and gate first infant milk atm

I breastfed both mine but that sounds exactly the same as my experience and completely normal and means everything is working. They poo less as they get a bit older.

Onceuponacheesecake · 04/05/2019 00:07

In the first twelve weeks my baby varied from 12 times a day to twice a week. He seemed perfectly happy either way. If you're concerned or he had any other symptoms talk to your HV .

RedSheep73 · 04/05/2019 00:09

Newborns poo a lot particularly straight after a feed. So do other animals actually, it's a well known reflex.

Sashkin · 04/05/2019 00:17

I used to get through about 15 nappies a day, so yep 10-12 times a day sounds perfectly normal to me.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 04/05/2019 00:18

Normal! Big explosive weird coloured ones too, not even little dainty ones.

incogneto · 04/05/2019 02:45

Thanks everyone! I honestly didn't know if it was normal or not.

Can anyone also tell me how often their DC wanted a feed? DS is starting to root less than 2 hours before he was last fed, I give him 3-4oz bottles and he's formula fed.

Sorry for all the questions I'm a FTM Sad

I can’t remember how often mine fed at this age but it was a lot. When he had growth spurts he would feed almost constantly for hours.

incogneto · 04/05/2019 02:56

Thank you for your replies I feel so much more reassured now!

My newborn feeds probably 10 times a day and poos more than that. Feel like I'm constantly changing nappies. Bf though.

LuckyKitty13 · 04/05/2019 03:12

Agree with all of the above. My baby is almost 6 weeks, and poos many times a day. She's never gone more than 2 hours without a feed - usually feeds every 20 mins to 1.5hrs depending on time of day. And yes in growth spurs or fussy times will feed constantly (exclusively breastfed). You're doing a great job! Well done so far Smile

b0bb1n · 04/05/2019 03:18

Sometimes I wonder if my month old boy poos enough, but as he drinks breast milk (pumped) I was told their body takes more of it so they can tend to have smaller or less frequent poos. I also read they can go up to 5 days without pooping?! He definitely doesn't go anywhere near that long.

Am I weird for looking forward to when he's older and bigger and stronger? Newborns are so delicate and there's so much to worry about :(

Sashkin · 04/05/2019 03:48

b0bb1n we had a blissful two month spell when DS was only pooping once a week. Then we started him on solids and he’s been back to 4-5x a day ever since (now 2.5 yrs and it’s been stable for over 18 months so that is obviously going to be his normal pattern). Nursery love him, as you can imagine. I will be so glad to be rid of nappies.

ThriftyMcThrifty · 04/05/2019 03:50

Mine pooed 9 times last night. We call him the nocturnal pooper. He was born on Sunday.

olderthanyouthink · 04/05/2019 05:09

Ahhh you just reminded me of DD pooing while she fed Grin I found it funny, in one end and out the other.

Now she stealth poos so I feel guilty when it's clearly been there for while or the latest trick is doing it while standing (because who wants to sit in it?)

LightDrizzle · 04/05/2019 05:22

Also I think back-in-the-day, formula was more calorie dense to “satisfy” the baby, and now formulations have improved to be more similar to breast milk nutritionally. So if older parents are expressing surprise at the 2 hourly feeding when FF, that might be why. Mine were BF and also fed two hourly and produced astounding quantities of poo.
I don’t know how it all worked with the Tudors when they swaddled babies to a board!
Your newborn sounds perfectly normal. They are SO unreasonable Grin
Congratulations!

MrsTeaspoon · 04/05/2019 05:27

My month old often drains 5oz every two hours. Has even searched after 1hour (and the feed can take an hour anyway, so can be constant but averages out over an entire day). And boy do newborns poo a lot!! They also snuffle loudly and grunt and groan and squirm a lot. Odd little creatures but oh so adorable. Yanbu, always good to ask and learn. Congratulations by the way.

user1480880826 · 04/05/2019 06:39

The poos sound normal.

As far as feeding goes, make sure you read up on responsive feeding and paced feeding. It is very easy to overfeed a formula fed baby. Let your baby tell you when they’re hungry and when they’re full. The aim is not to finish every bottle.
