For context, I used to be very overweight and unfit, mostly due to MH issues. I lost 38 kilos, and I've kept it off for 6 years now. I discovered I loved hiking and enjoy 10-15k hikes around the Brecon Beacons, for example.

I'm not a 'natural' sportsperson in any way. I'm very short, big bust, mild asthma, but I'm proud of my achievement and want to improve my fitness more so I recently started running. My legs are strong from the hikes but I am slow.

And I say running. Well. More sweaty, breathy jogging, really.

I ran jogged my first full non-stop 5k distance yesterday. I felt elated! I met a friend for coffee this afternoon and told her I'd managed my first 5k in 39 minutes and I was hoping next time I'd knock a minute or two off the time.

She actually scoffed and said she could walk 5k quicker than that. Then she changed the subject.

I can't believe I felt, and still feel, utterly deflated. I know it's really slow and an average time is 25-30 mins but is 39 mins embarrassingly awful?

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

Your friend is a cow bag.

More sweaty, breathy jogging, really. I am not a natural runner either OP, but I managed to sweaty breathy jog my way through a half marathon Grin it's a recognised running style, I tell you!!

GunpowderGelatine · 03/05/2019 21:41

That's awful OP, what a horrible person she is! FWIW, I'm tall and lean and love to run but I'm naturally slow (a plodder), always have been, and couldn't do 5k in 39 minutes, I think you've done amazingly well!

MrsFrTedCrilly · 03/05/2019 21:42

Well done, your friend is really not being very nice so just ignore.
That’s an awesome achievement, it’s massively tough to get running and keep going for 5k regardless how long it takes ( I’m also a slow but steady typeGrin) people take the piss but honestly however much it stings at the time I’m the one who’s going to reap the health benefits.
Go you!!!!!

familygermsareok · 03/05/2019 21:42

OP, well done, that is a fantastic achievement and your 'friend' is clearly jealous. Please don't throw away your trainers. Throw away your friend!
I love parkrun, it is so friendly and supportive. But you don't have to chat, you can just turn up and quietly do your own thing if you prefer. As others have said there is a tail walker so you never get lost or left behind. Lots of people run/walk at ours and it's unusual for our tail walker to be in before 50 mins, so you are definitely comfortably in that time. Give it a go without overthinking it, let us know how you get on tomorrow Smile

StuckInsideAnEcho · 03/05/2019 21:42

I can't run. And I wish I can, everyone including those with one leg who I know are running and I can't.

Please don't stop. Keep running, keep it up!

She obviously has nothing special in her life and doesn't want you to, either. She's a cunt.

TheweewitchRoz · 03/05/2019 21:43

Op, she's being horrible - you've done brilliantly.

Definitely do park run tomorrow - I'm in West Midlands too so if you fancy doing mine, PM me and I'll happily meet you. You will be fine doing it alone though - everyone is very friendly and there's a tail walker so you can't get lost or left behind. Good luck Thanks

JaxLB · 03/05/2019 21:48

I agree about the time. My friend and i walk 5K once a week. We are not slow, and it takes us about an hour. So 39 mins for running is a good result. Keep it up.

Careylisa · 03/05/2019 21:48

Fantastic going!!! Well done, I’m about to do a 10k and there’s no way I’d get to 39 mins by 5k at the moment!
Let the hater hate! Sad times for people who are meant to be supportive friends but just want to put your achievements down!

WeMarchOn · 03/05/2019 21:48

@Standingonlego wow what a legend Bob is!! The other dude looks like Shawn Mendes 🤣

Notnownotneverever · 03/05/2019 21:48

Wow - what a total bitch of a friend you have! I don't think I have any friends who would be so rude and awful to me.

Ignore the jealous bitch. That is an awesome achievement and you should be really proud of yourself. Keep going and forget about her stupid comment.

thankyourforthemusic · 03/05/2019 21:49

The cheeky cow !!
If she can walk quicker I'd like to see that .
I do a 5k in 41 minutes I keep going a few seconds quicker each time but like the saying goes your still lapping everyone on the couch .

thankyourforthemusic · 03/05/2019 21:51

Oh and definitely do park run , I'm always one of the slowest but so what everyone us so supportive and encouraging. I actually look forward to Saturday mornings .

HBStowe · 03/05/2019 21:52

Your friend is a bitch. When I started doing park run, even even I ran the whole way it took me 50 minutes. And nobody ever said anything to me except how well I was doing and how proud they were.

You’re fantastic and your friend is a jealous cow.

VetinarisTerrier · 03/05/2019 21:55

OMG how incredibly embarrassing! Did she realize that she had actually said that out loud, maybe that's why she changed the subject so fast. Oops, she let the 'cat' out of the bag and showed her true green eyed monster. I would be mortified to even think such a thing about a friend's fantastic achievement, but to say it out loud to their face. She's got mud on her face for sure!

Well done OP, you truly kicked butt and it's on-wards and upwards for youFlowers. Next time she wants to meet up say, 'Sorry, gotta runGrin'

Nottheduchess · 03/05/2019 21:58

Friends build each other up, not knock each other down. What sort of person would knock another for running 5k? Even if it took you 60, 70, 80 mins, you are doing it!! Fuck ‘em!!

Stuckforthefourthtime · 03/05/2019 22:00

Don't throw them away, throw them at her. Then buy yourself a fancy new pair, because you did awesomely and deserve it!

notoafternoontea · 03/05/2019 22:01

You don’t need to wait! Do it tonight! There will be someone called a tail walker who won’t let you get left behind. You are doing fantastically well. Come on - I was debating bothering with park run tomorrow - I’ll do with with you! Imagine me puffing my way around with you Grin

AtrociousCircumstance · 03/05/2019 22:05

Your achievement with turning your health and fitness around is so inspiring OP! Go you! And brilliant you’ve joined the park run 😊

Friends don’t treat each other like that - that was the comment of a frenemy I’m afraid. I’d love to see her try to run a 5K. What she said reflects her own issues and must be thrown with contempt into the ‘immediately dismissed’ bit of your brain.

Tinkobell · 03/05/2019 22:12

I can't run at all OP as I have x 2 torn meniscus, don't throw the bloody trainers away - be grateful and rightly proud of your running. The 'friend' is a cow.

Tiredtessy · 03/05/2019 22:13

Don’t listen! You’ve done amazing! Running is tough and when I do park run it takes me 40 mins sometimes more and I’ve been jogging so to speak for a couple of years on and off! Keep it up!

thanksamillion · 03/05/2019 22:14

OP I'm Parkrunning tomorrow morning and even though I've been running on and off for a couple of years I'm still working on getting below my PB of 34.22.
Do it tomorrow morning then challenge your 'friend' to join you next week!

returnofthecat · 03/05/2019 22:14

She doesn't sound like much of a friend.

The parkrun community is hugely welcoming, so there are plenty of actual friends waiting to meet you on Saturday. You said you'd registered - please print off your barcode if you can; that way you can bring the bit of paper with you tomorrow and get an official time.

You run faster than me, and I've been running for years. So I'm pretty damn impressed - well done, you. Smile

M4J4 · 03/05/2019 22:15

I was walking bow legged for a week after my first and only 5k! 39 mins is fab, took me an hour.

SavingSpaces2019 · 03/05/2019 22:21

I'd be really hesitant to share anything with her in the future. I felt really ashamed
Genuine friends don't make you feel like this.
She wasn't even joking - she deliberately put you down and tried pissing on your achievement!

Do you really want someone like this as your friend?

ladyflower23 · 03/05/2019 22:23

There's no way i could run 5k in 39 mins or do it without stopping. Your friend sounds jealous. Don't lose your motivation because of her.
