For context, I used to be very overweight and unfit, mostly due to MH issues. I lost 38 kilos, and I've kept it off for 6 years now. I discovered I loved hiking and enjoy 10-15k hikes around the Brecon Beacons, for example.

I'm not a 'natural' sportsperson in any way. I'm very short, big bust, mild asthma, but I'm proud of my achievement and want to improve my fitness more so I recently started running. My legs are strong from the hikes but I am slow.

And I say running. Well. More sweaty, breathy jogging, really.

I ran jogged my first full non-stop 5k distance yesterday. I felt elated! I met a friend for coffee this afternoon and told her I'd managed my first 5k in 39 minutes and I was hoping next time I'd knock a minute or two off the time.

She actually scoffed and said she could walk 5k quicker than that. Then she changed the subject.

I can't believe I felt, and still feel, utterly deflated. I know it's really slow and an average time is 25-30 mins but is 39 mins embarrassingly awful?

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

Great update, well done OP! You’re an inspiration.

Noluthando · 13/02/2022 08:26

You have made massive progress in your health and fitness and continue to do so. That is not a friend.

LadyPropane · 13/02/2022 08:28

I've read your updates - well done! That's amazing.

Also, you probably don't even care anymore since it was so long ago but I wanted to throw in my 2cents about the OP... For a beginner at running I think a 39 min 5k is really good! And no, most people would not walk it faster than that!

Anyway, good riddance to bad rubbish. Glad you ditched your jealous friend.

ivykaty44 · 13/02/2022 08:29

Op what a fabulous journey you’ve had, such grit & determination.
I’m hoping you’ve made friends with other runners

Sad as it is losing a friend, you’re done yourself proud with running

Noluthando · 13/02/2022 08:29

Oops! Sorry I didn't realise the OP was from 2019. Amazing updates ! Brilliant!

Gonnagetgoing · 13/02/2022 08:33

Was she joking?

I can run approx 1 mile in 20 minutes but only been running jogging and not tracking my time just yet..might do.

She is probably jealous if not joking.

@SlowStarters

I can't believe it's been years since I started this thread!

But I wanted to update, because old threads so rarely are updated, that I'm still running!

I've run lots of 10ks, (PB is 57 mins!) Two half marathons, and now running sub 30 5ks (at a push, mind!!) And I never saw that "friend" again.

To anyone running, or starting to run - I can't recommend Parkrun enough - or just getting out there and starting to jog - it might just save you, as it did me. I owe this thread a lot - thank you, really.

I hope everyone is as well as possible, and thank you again, through lockdown and a lot of tough times, your encouragement from a long time ago somehow stuck with me 😊

Just saw this thread pop up! So glad you are still running 💕 I’ve been a bit shit recently changed jobs and still trying to make regular time for running 😊

I’ve thought about you often and wondered how you were 💕

Lemonyfuckit · 13/02/2022 08:38

I really loved this thread when it started OP so thanks for updating - I started a new job a year ago and have been working such long hours exercise has utterly fallen by the wayside, I can't believe how unfit I've become. Seeing your update just now has inspired me to put my trainers on and get out there today - it will be a SLOW start but starting is better than nothing, so thank you!!!

ShadowPuppets · 13/02/2022 08:39

Hahah I was scrolling back to get grumpy at whoever resurrected a zombie (my guess was someone who wanted to sell some sort of weight loss or fitness MLM Grin) how nice to read your update and be so pleasantly surprised! Will teach me to be a cynic on a Sunday morning!

So glad you’ve kept the running up and even more glad you ditched the ‘friend’ OP. Smile

I completely understand why you feel hurt. But honestly. Sod her. Do not let her ruin this for you. Your goals are your goals. This is your life and go on girl! We can't all be super fit. Never ever compare your goals to anyone else's as there are a million reasons people are different. No two people are the same. Maybe she's jealous.

There are people who can't be happy for a person sorting their lives or health out. I have a mum like it. If I get motivated and say I'm gunna buy some plants this year I want to feel good about My garden. She will point out her gardens perfect all the time and there's no excuse for mine not being. Some people rain on the sunniest days.

Keep up the hard work and be happy for you. Xx

Joxster · 13/02/2022 08:47

OP I remember this thread! So pleased you are still running. I ❤️ parkrun and I’m glad you found it.

MrsWinters · 13/02/2022 08:47

She’s just jealous. It’s really quite a good first time. Well done.

Read the OP's fantastic update.

It's quoted in the post just before yours.

MagpieCastle · 13/02/2022 08:53

This thread has made my morning! It’s so positive and inspirational. You’ve come so far and also encouraged so many people to step out of their comfort zone. MN at its very best. Please keep updating as we’re all still cheering you on. Flowers

BuddhaAtSea · 13/02/2022 08:55

Oh, you little star!🤩 So chuffed for you for enjoying it still ❤️

Opaljewel · 13/02/2022 08:57

She is a first class bitch. Dump

Bangolads · 13/02/2022 08:57

I’ve noticed people can be really weird about running stuff! I’m slow and shot but I do it. My friend did a fake smile and changed the subject when I started. I was so proud of my small achievements and she couldn’t share. We’re actually not friends any more, that was part of realising she wasn’t the nicest.

Opaljewel · 13/02/2022 08:58

Oops yes I need to read through the full thread. Doing so now...

Bangolads · 13/02/2022 08:58

Oh gosh and well done btw- you sound FAB!!

Tulipomania · 13/02/2022 08:58

Very well done OP.

I also ran my first 5k in 39 minutes and that was 4 years ago.

I am not a natural athlete but have kept going with the running because it makes me feel great.

I don't think my times have improved much over that time, but my objective is always first to get out of the door!

Bairnsmum05 · 13/02/2022 08:58

I am in awe of you. You are such an inspiration Star

Tulipomania · 13/02/2022 08:59

OOPs Zombie.

Marmite27 · 13/02/2022 08:59

We celebrated a PB of 39:07 at Parkrun yesterday!

Sure the average of people who will run 5k is lower, but if it was an average of everyone your age in the country it’d be much higher.

We’ll do e on your run!
