For context, I used to be very overweight and unfit, mostly due to MH issues. I lost 38 kilos, and I've kept it off for 6 years now. I discovered I loved hiking and enjoy 10-15k hikes around the Brecon Beacons, for example.

I'm not a 'natural' sportsperson in any way. I'm very short, big bust, mild asthma, but I'm proud of my achievement and want to improve my fitness more so I recently started running. My legs are strong from the hikes but I am slow.

And I say running. Well. More sweaty, breathy jogging, really.

I ran jogged my first full non-stop 5k distance yesterday. I felt elated! I met a friend for coffee this afternoon and told her I'd managed my first 5k in 39 minutes and I was hoping next time I'd knock a minute or two off the time.

She actually scoffed and said she could walk 5k quicker than that. Then she changed the subject.

I can't believe I felt, and still feel, utterly deflated. I know it's really slow and an average time is 25-30 mins but is 39 mins embarrassingly awful?

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

That was supposed to say lazy cow that I am

Emmmie · 04/01/2020 09:07

OP you are amazing and you have come so far! Your friend was incredibly rude, please ignore what they said 🌷💐🌷

Chancey1982 · 04/01/2020 09:08

I did couch to 5k. Was really proud of myself the first (and only 🤣) time I ever jogged the full 5k. I don't run anymore and have gotten chubbier again. Keep going! You're doing great.

FourDecades · 04/01/2020 09:13

Absolutely fabulous!!! Do you ever see your "friend"?

ContessaLovesTheSunshine · 04/01/2020 09:14

It's lovely to hear you're still running OP - what a wonderful way to swap evil for good!

Athe · 04/01/2020 09:36

Have just skimmed the whole thread. Congratulations on all of your hard work and achievements. The tone of your updates seem so much more confident and happier than when you first started posting.

confusedandemployed · 04/01/2020 09:48

I've just read the whole thing too, and am so impressed OP!

I'm starting CrossFit this morning, I'm a wee bit nervous. Also a Parkrun has recently started at a local country park, my plan going forward is to CrossFit in the week and Parkrun on Saturdays.

I used to be very fit, but a very topsy turvy year has set me back a fair bit so I'll just be pleased to get round next week.

fizzandchips · 04/01/2020 09:56

I’ve just read the whole thread again. As inspirational as it was the first time. Your story continues to touch people. Still awaiting operation (on foot, so not something that I could run on) but I have C25K ready on my phone and my bar codes printed and 2020 is going to be the year I ‘do it’. A slow mile is the same distance as a fast mile!
Thank you for updating.

Angelw · 04/01/2020 10:09

Your friend is jealous of you, you
just didn’t know it.

LaneBoy · 04/01/2020 10:12

Happy to see this thread again (I think I commented under an old name) you are doing brilliantly!

Have you seen Jealous Friend lately? :o

Spacecudet · 04/01/2020 10:15

That is a fantastic achievement! Whenever I have done 5k it has been in about 45 minutes. Well done you, keep going x

MillennialPink · 04/01/2020 10:31

Sign up for ParkRun and invite your bitch friend to join you. Then you'll see how fast she really is...

Whiskeylover45 · 04/01/2020 10:37

Shes a twat. I can walk it but it would take me an hour to an hour and a half. When I was much fitter, pre baby, I could possibly do it in 50 - 55 minutes, but that was long fast strides. Shes jealous, ignore and keep on with the brilliant work you're doing

Frenchw1fe · 04/01/2020 10:53

Ring her up and tell her you’ve put her name down to do a 5k parkrun with you and you’re looking forward to having her as a pacemaker as she’s so good.

Frenchw1fe · 04/01/2020 10:55

Oh. It’s an old thread. Hope op revisits.

Oldraver · 04/01/2020 10:57

Frenchw1fe.... do RTFT

AgentJohnson · 04/01/2020 10:58

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

Don’t give her the power to make you feel bad about yourself.

Snog · 04/01/2020 11:02

Most people can't run 5k OP so you have done absolutely brilliantly!

Your friends should support you and celebrate with you and not mock you. It says a lot about her, have a think about whether you want to stay friends.

nowlook · 04/01/2020 11:06

@SlowStarters

25-30k per week now? That's incredible! I've more chance of earning that than running it Grin

NZlife · 04/01/2020 11:08

This is such a lovely thread!
I ran a half marathon in October 2018 and have basically not done a lot of running since after having to rest an injury for MONTHS!
Monday my little boy is back to Pre school & I'm going to be getting out for a run. Going to get back to doing park run when I'm not working as well so thank you everyone for the amazing inspiration Grin

Gonewiththemadness · 04/01/2020 11:13

That’s an amazing achievement! The run, the weight loss, the new found love of walking, everything!
I also love walking but can never run... wish I could!
I tried a 5k run (jog) once with a friend that runs regularly and it took around an hour and I have to wear a huge thick sanitary towel or I’ll wee myself! 🤣
Your ‘friend’ sounds like a jealous old trout!

EvaHarknessRose · 04/01/2020 11:24

Please join us on the slow runners Facebook group. You'll be quicker than many of us but they don't mind what your pace is. For context, I've run 26 5k parkruns between 51 and 46 minutes. I'm a runner.

staceyflack · 04/01/2020 11:51

You're brilliant. Well done. She's a spiteful cow, and not a friend. Keep your trainers. 💐

Yetanotherwinter · 04/01/2020 12:20

Well done on changing your life. Who needs friends like these! She probably jealous that you’re making changes. Keep at it. You’re doing brilliantly💐

Littlemeadow123 · 04/01/2020 12:49

39 minutes is amazing, especially for your first non-stop one. Don't let her put you off.
