For context, I used to be very overweight and unfit, mostly due to MH issues. I lost 38 kilos, and I've kept it off for 6 years now. I discovered I loved hiking and enjoy 10-15k hikes around the Brecon Beacons, for example.

I'm not a 'natural' sportsperson in any way. I'm very short, big bust, mild asthma, but I'm proud of my achievement and want to improve my fitness more so I recently started running. My legs are strong from the hikes but I am slow.

And I say running. Well. More sweaty, breathy jogging, really.

I ran jogged my first full non-stop 5k distance yesterday. I felt elated! I met a friend for coffee this afternoon and told her I'd managed my first 5k in 39 minutes and I was hoping next time I'd knock a minute or two off the time.

She actually scoffed and said she could walk 5k quicker than that. Then she changed the subject.

I can't believe I felt, and still feel, utterly deflated. I know it's really slow and an average time is 25-30 mins but is 39 mins embarrassingly awful?

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

Oh my god that outfit! Those are some sizable nipples 😂

We do but I’ll pm it when I find it 🙂 please don’t feel you have to tho x

MustShowDH · 20/07/2019 17:57

Only just found this thread and read it all through.

You have inspired me. I signed up to Parkrun a while ago, but haven't been brave enough to go yet.
I can't run for more than about 15seconds, so thought I'd just walk it. Can walk for miles.

I hope your mean friend is a distant memory.

Congrats on your progress.x.

SlowStarters · 20/07/2019 18:13

@MustShowDH do it! I really regret not doing it sooner, it's a great atmosphere.

Do it whichever way you're comfortable - run 15 secs, walk 1 minute, repeat, if that's an enjoyable pace. And report back!

@swampytiggaa I absolutely insist on sponsorship! Find that link Grin

your (EX) friend sounds like a right cow! well done you for getting up and doing it ..... I'm still dreaming/putting off jogging/running/power walking.. seriously, well done!

swampytiggaa · 28/07/2019 11:26

Week 2 of half marathon training done ✅ blummin hot but managed 12.5k 🙂 hope you are still doing parkrun etc!

SlowStarters · 03/08/2019 08:13

Today is Parkrun Day! Yay! Who's running?! I'm about to head off for my 11th Parkrun - can't believe the weeks are flying by so quickly.

@swampytiggaa oh wow well done! And love the pic. It's not easy training is this heat and humid air either, what distance will you do next week?

Been lurking on this thread since it started, OP and you inspired me to start C25K. So thank you. I'm on week 8. Think I'm still some way off 5K, but that will be my second target after 30 minutes. Have a good run today.

InfiniteSheldon · 03/08/2019 08:51

You gave done a great job i would be over the moon with that

swampytiggaa · 03/08/2019 11:12

Ran with my friend who hasn’t run since May this morning 🙂 just over 41 minutes 🙂

Due to run 7 miles in the morning 😭😭 hoping it’s a bit less humid...

Well done everyone who went out today 😁

SlowStarters · 03/08/2019 11:25

@MotherOfSoupDragons oh wow, well done! Honestly the c25k takes a lot of grit and determination, it's the toughest bit, and you're already at week 8 - it really won't be long until you hit 5k!

Don't do what I did and beat yourself up for not being faster/running longer/etc as it's all great progress; now I make sure I celebrate each & every time I get my trainers on and get out the door.

Just waiting on today's Parkrun results...I've been doing longer slow runs lately so I'm hoping the hard work has paid off and I've shaved some time off.

5k is the hardest distance to crack and you have done amazingly well!! I agree with other posters, sounds like the green eyed monster to me! 5k is still 5k whether you do it in 25 mins or 39 mins, you have still covered the same ground. Well done dude!

VenusTiger · 03/08/2019 11:42

Your friend is jealous and wants you to throw your trainers away
She’s no friend.

froggybiby · 03/08/2019 11:47

Well done on your achievements 👏 I haven't read the whole thread sorry...years ago I did a couple of 5k races for charity & my time wasn't far off 39mns, although I don't recall exactly.
Like you I lost a lost of weight a few years ago, 4 stones over 4 years ago. I have managed to maintain ever since. We started couchto5k a few weeks ago...haven't started park run though. I will let you know when we do.

SlowStarters · 08/08/2019 11:57

Just another little update - I've signed up for a Quarter Marathon in September! And I'm friggin amazed I ran a PB last Parkrun of 32:30. I also have a gym induction with a personal trainer next week to discuss a proper training schedule to get fitter and more much toned. This is changing my life so much, can't quite believe it.

I feel like I owe so much to this thread and the support I had. Thank you all!

Well done you OP. Amazing stuff.

swampytiggaa · 14/08/2019 07:08

How is it going @SlowStarters? I’m still half marathon training 🙂 grateful for the rainy weather 😂😂😂

sodonesooverit · 14/08/2019 07:10

Aww this is a lovely feelgood read - well done OP!

SlowStarters · 14/08/2019 07:27

@swampytiggaa the weather has been so much better the past couple of weeks hasn't it! I really struggle in the heat.

How's the half marathon training going? Do you have a plan for a time/pace?

I'm doing really well! Parkrun (number 13 next Saturday!) Has given me such confidence. I do the fastest pace I can manage and then a longer, slow run mid-week, longest distance was 14km. My legs are really aching from a 10k yesterday.

PB 5k: 00:31:55
PB 10k: 01:12:50

I'm officially addicted and it's definitely the fault of you guys and the thread! Grin

There's a half marathon in late October I'm thinking about, but I'm really not sure if that's enough time my head says I can't do it to train.
