For context, I used to be very overweight and unfit, mostly due to MH issues. I lost 38 kilos, and I've kept it off for 6 years now. I discovered I loved hiking and enjoy 10-15k hikes around the Brecon Beacons, for example.

I'm not a 'natural' sportsperson in any way. I'm very short, big bust, mild asthma, but I'm proud of my achievement and want to improve my fitness more so I recently started running. My legs are strong from the hikes but I am slow.

And I say running. Well. More sweaty, breathy jogging, really.

I ran jogged my first full non-stop 5k distance yesterday. I felt elated! I met a friend for coffee this afternoon and told her I'd managed my first 5k in 39 minutes and I was hoping next time I'd knock a minute or two off the time.

She actually scoffed and said she could walk 5k quicker than that. Then she changed the subject.

I can't believe I felt, and still feel, utterly deflated. I know it's really slow and an average time is 25-30 mins but is 39 mins embarrassingly awful?

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

Morning all! I'm still so touched the thread is still going; it's all your fault I'm addicted to PR! Can't believe I've just done my 5th.

I just managed a personal best at Parkrun this morning Grin 34:23 - I'm delighted. Will take all the advice for the 10k, thank you so much PP.

How's everyone doing?

@slowstarters Sub 35!! That’s a great time!!! Well done. Still waiting for mine to come through but it’s around the 33 mark. I was hoping for a pb today but it was tough going.

We’ve got a 10k on Friday night so I suspect that pb is going to remain elusive next week too Grin

MissFitton · 15/06/2019 12:06

@SlowStarters wow! That's a fab time. Well done. I went too this morning and kept thinking 'could I do this distance twice?' Shock

swampytiggaa · 15/06/2019 12:37

Very well done! I did 58:35 this morning supporting a friend doing her first parkrun back after an horrific car accident last year. She is only allowed to walk it currently so that is what we did 😁

IncrediblySadToo · 16/06/2019 16:51

Well done. That’s a great time! Are you finding it easier each time or just as hard because you’re pushing to improve your time? You’re allowed to just enjoy it and not ‘improve’ you know 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣. You’re getting out there and doing it and you’ve inspired loads of people to start or read start running. That’s a great thing in & of itself!

How’s puppy been this week - still on DH’s last nerve?

SquirrelShit · 16/06/2019 21:13

Yay, you're doing brilliantly!

SomersetS · 22/06/2019 16:47

Any Parkrunners today? I did my 4th & shaved off about a minute and a half. Not going to say it was easy but mentally I found myself "knowing I could do it" so didn't walk at all.
What a fantastic concept.
OP did you go out today?

SlowStarters · 06/07/2019 07:19

Morning all! It's Parkrun day!

@SomersetS well done for last week, that's amazing! Are you Parkrunning this morning?

I can't believe I'm getting ready for my 8th!! It's the best feeling.

How is everyone? @SquirrelShit @MissFitton how are you both??

@swampytiggaa are you supporting anyone this week? I wear purple and pretend I'm in your club Grin

@IncrediblySadToo I did keep pushing it every week to try and beat my PB but I read your post last week and I took it easier. I ran a 36-minuter and even though it was a minute or two slower than PB I enjoyed it more, so I do need to stop competing with myself!

SomersetS · 06/07/2019 09:02

@SlowStarters no Parkrun today, though did go last week - treating myself to a lazy start! Problem with parkrunning for me is they are all about a 30/45min drive away plus parking! Today I needed a lie-in. Good luck everyone.

ChippingInLowCarbing · 06/07/2019 10:33

SlowStarters I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I’m realky competitive with myself, always pushing for more, better, faster or whatever and sometimes you really do have to step back and see that you’re not enjoying it because if that and to just stop pushing and start enjoying!

You’re on your 8th and I still can hardly walk (physio in two wells so hopefully she’s some miracle worker, but not holding my breath!).

I hope you enjoyed it this morning!

How’s puppy doing? Or more to the point how’s DH coping with puppy?

swampytiggaa · 06/07/2019 12:45

Hellooo! I ran with my friend this morning and did my fastest parkrun of the year (35:59) although obviously I could have walked it faster 😉 that was number 113 for me! I got there early to help my friend who was doing her first stint as RD today then hung around to help process the results.

Tomorrow I’m doing c25k homework with a couple of people at 7am 😭😭 then doing a 10k with our runchat group which should be hot and fun 😁

Well done on parkrun number 8 💕 they soon add up! And I love 💗 the positivity you have now compared to your first post 😁 you’ve got loads of new friends now 👍🏻

SlowStarters · 06/07/2019 13:15

@ChippingInLowCarbing DH and pup are very well, thank you! DH comes every week to cheer me on, pup loves the excitement too :)

I managed 34:50 today, it was quite humid but not nearly as hot as last week so I really enjoyed it. I'm going to try and manage 7k on Wednesday :) Of course, if my former friend was walking she could have probably finished in 12 minutes... Still silence from her - I think the term is ghosted?!

@swampytiggaa it's made such a positive impact on me, it's now cemented into my week and I love the atmosphere - over 550 people today! Eeee I'll think of you at 7am, now that's dedicated!

A group of women were running ahead of me today, chatting away (I tried to keep pace with them) and I could just imagine them being a Mumsnet gaggle of happy joggers.

I'm thinking of setting a local meetup.com for joggy sweaty plodders like me who would like to do Parkrun but would like company. Trying to find the courage!

I realllly want to do a bit of Parkrun tourism and come to everyone's local ones :)

OPyou are an absolute inspiration!

swampytiggaa · 06/07/2019 13:47

Definitely get a group of runners 🙂 my smallest child’s best friends mom (are you still with me?😂😂) has started coming to parkrun and is loving it 💕 it’s amazing how many people you can persuade to join 😂😂

39 mins is a great achievement, you should be proud of yourself, ignore your friend and give yourself a big pat on the back :) x

sqirrelfriends · 06/07/2019 15:09

She sounds like a jealous little child. Ignore her.

Your achievements are amazing, just to lose that much weight and keep it off is fantastic, well done.

SlowStarters · 06/07/2019 16:12

@WeirdCatLady wow that's incredible, you're amazing!

If you're in anywhere in/around the Midlands let me know Grin and I'll come Parkwalk with you.

I wish I'd started doing Parkrun years ago when I first heard about it - sod feeling 'ready', it really is all about being part of it.

Today a guy was running with his guide as he was blind - he overtook me (of course!) and everyone was cheering just as hard for everyone else as they were for him; really made me realise how important it is to get out there and give things a go, even if they're out your comfort zone.

parkrun is amazing. Ours is quite small usually about 100+ runners and loads of regulars. We are a multi lap route so us slow ones get cheered on by the speedy ones as they lap us 💕 plus we have loads of marshals who are very good at encouraging everyone.

swampytiggaa · 06/07/2019 16:52

Sandwell Valley? I’d love to do that one 💕 I’m from wednesbury but moved to north Devon 9 years ago. Last time I was up on a Saturday I went Walsall arboretum as Sandwell Valley wasn’t up and running then.

BTW the last person in is a volunteer known as the tailwalker so I’d be very surprised if they were anything other than welcoming to walkers 💕

What a cow! You've done really well to run an entire 5k and that time is fab! There's no way I could run the whole thing and I bet less than half of adults could either! Hate people who have nothing nice to say, she's the one with the problem not you
