Chores for a 9 year old

My 9 year old SD stays with me and my husband (her father) every weekend. AIBU to expect my husband to give her a few chores to do around the house when she stays? I've explain to my husband that she is family and not a 'guest' so should be expected to help out. I'm sick of tidying her room, making her bed, putting her clothes away.

What jobs would be acceptable for a 9yr old?

My 9yo DD is supposed to tidy her room, put her dirty clothes in the laudry basket and put her clean laundry away.
Everyday she does 1 or 2 chores among the following :

  • emptying the dishwasher
  • setting the table
  • helping clear the table
  • sweeping or hoovering the living room floor

What strikes me is that your DH should be the one tidying her room, making her bed and so on if he will not ask her.

@RoyalChocolat his version of tidying and my version of tidying are two separate things haha

My 10yo has to pick his clothes up off the floor and put them in his washing bag before Saturday morning. If he doesn’t he loses his pocket money. And he opens the gates each morning, & sets the supper table if I ask him.
If he wants to earn extra, he sorts the recycling.

But tidy - not a chance Smile

One rule for all in our house, including 8yo ds: tidy up after yourself. That means it's not my responsibility to pick towels off floors, items of clothing, toys, rubbish and wrappers, plates etc. You use it, you clear it away. I think that's fair, consistent and easily enforceable with step children too.

She should be making her own bed and maybe putting her clothes away but I wouldn't expect her to do anything else.

Like her Dad, her version of tidying (and making her bed) may well be different from yours.

DD (9) does the following chores.

Daily
Makes bed every day
Puts dirty clothes in appropriate wash basket
Puts clean clothes away
Feed garden birds (to be fair she asked for this as she loves it)

Weekly
Empty or fill dishwasher 5 times
Tidy room enough to hoover the floor twice a week
Strip bedding and place in wash basket

if it helps DS5 does the following

Daily
Makes bed every day
Puts dirty clothes in appropriate wash basket

Weekly
Help fill dishwasher
Tidy room enough to hoover the floor twice a week
