AIBU to wonder wtf these bugs are?

Sorry, posting for traffic, but what the hell are these? I don't think they're mosquitos but I don't really know. The wings are a mix of transparent an black. Even if we only open a small bathroom window during the day time we seem to get loads in the house. They don't flit so are easy to deal with but I'm fed up with them and want to be able to open more windows. DH is wondered if they've 'nested' (whatever the hell you call it for insects) in a window frame?

Not sure OP... is the body striped or the wings?

From this pic I found online, the UK mozzie appears to have a black and white striped body, and semi opaque wings.

I’m not a mosquito expert though, so best to ask someone who is.

After some Google sleuthing I'd say it looks like a wood gnat www.gardensafari.net/english/mosquitoes.htm

Looks like a mayfly.

Heratnumber7 · 01/05/2019 23:43

Gnat. How come you've never noticed these before? They're everywhere in this country.

DontCallMeShitley · 01/05/2019 23:44

Get some sticky back velcro, you can buy rolls of it, you only need the hook side, not the loop.

Stick it around the window frame, no gaps. Then put some net curtain on it and you have an insect net which will enable you to open the windows without being invaded. IKEA Lill are cheap nets and ideal for this.

I get those bugs coming in the back door, they seem to like damp and water.

Yes! @PolPotNoodle that's what they are - wood gnats!

I do remember then from the last couple of years, but never in my previous flat. There are so many of the damn things here.
