Thinking this is a waste of cake

Seens lots of posts on facbook/instagram lately of 1st birthday cake smash photo sessions. Ok LO looks cute but all that lovely cake going to waste. Much rather have a slice of cake and a nice photo minus cake.

Hey babies can share 🤷🏻‍♀️

makingmammaries · 28/04/2019 18:22

I’m with you, OP. There really are people who don’t have enough food, and it does seem obscene to ruin a cake just for fun.

bridgetreilly · 28/04/2019 18:31

Oh, it's awful. Have a proper birthday cake and give the kid a bit of it to have fun with. But a whole cake wasted just for some set-up photos? Ugh.

HermioneWeasley · 28/04/2019 18:32

It’s disgusting in lots of ways

Sparklingbrook · 28/04/2019 18:34

I don't understand it at all. Seems an odd thing to do.

TheTrollFairy · 28/04/2019 18:35

I think they are horrid. I don’t actually know anyone IRL who has had one!

foreverhanging · 28/04/2019 18:36

Not the point but who would want to clean it up as well?! Not my idea of fun..

Sparklingbrook · 28/04/2019 18:37

It makes me wonder what the baby will make of the photos when they are older. They will probably be 'Mum/Dad WHY did you make me smash a cake up and take pictures of it?'.

saphycat · 28/04/2019 18:48

@TheTrollFairy I do! But this woman also uses things like #mumpreuner in a non-ironic way so...

olderthanyouthink · 28/04/2019 18:55

I don't see the problem with giving a 1 year old a cupcake to eat/mash up or maybe a small homemade cake but why would you buy a fancy big cake for them the ruin?

ifoundthebread · 28/04/2019 18:58

My aunt made Ds a birthday cake, we put it in front of him to 'blow his candle out' and sing happy birthday, because it was covered in butter icing my sister thought it a funny idea to smack it into my face which then resulted in the remaining cake getting thrown about and a food fight breaking out. So technically a cake smash, was definitely worth the wasted cake.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 28/04/2019 22:28

I know a couple of people who have done it. Seems to be a growing trend.

YANBU

It is a waste of cake. Cakes are precious (I like cake).

Also it looks naff, makes mess (why one would want to clean cake out of a child's hair I don't know) and is just another example of people being unoriginal sheep by following an insta trend.

DameSquashalot · 28/04/2019 23:21

They're not my cup of tea. Even without the waste. I think the photos look really strange.

Beeziekn33ze · 28/04/2019 23:26

There’s clip somewhere on FB of a baby who didnt get it, just sat happily looking at the cake. So the mother pushes the child’s face down into the cake. Nasty.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 28/04/2019 23:27

I don't like any posed baby pictures; baby in a bucket, baby on a rug, female baby with giant bow ugh. The cake smash thing is just an extension of that for the older baby. Oh and no one else wants giant canvases of your children on their walls.

BackforGood · 28/04/2019 23:36

YANBU OP - it really is a bizarre thing to do Confused

hazell42 · 29/04/2019 06:10

I misread your title as 'thinking is a waste of cake' and thought that this was going to be a philosophical thread.
But you're right about cake smashes too

NoSauce · 29/04/2019 06:20

It’s bizarre. Looks awful, makes a mess and a huge waste. Stupid all round

BillywilliamV · 29/04/2019 06:37

Maybe it was cute the first time? But that was because it was original and presumably accidental. It’s beyond naff now and says a lot about our society’s attitude to food, where so many don’t get enough to eat; and to waste, while the planet is dying due to over consumption.
Actually it makes me quite cross!

Marnie76 · 29/04/2019 06:57

Confusing for the poor babies. One day are very encouraged to throw food around and probably told off the next day at home for the same thing. Waste of food. Terrible idea.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 29/04/2019 06:58

It's a bit of a "thing" in Australia too.
I have friends who've done it but it's not something I'd do for mine. I agree, it''s a waste of cake! Plus my 2 were both quite fastidious and didn't like getting their hands messy Wink

Lazypuppy · 29/04/2019 07:08

I did it, and the pictures are great. Its a bit of fun

LaurieMarlow · 29/04/2019 07:16

One day are very encouraged to throw food around and probably told off the next day at home for the same thing

I dont think many one year olds nowadays are told off for playing with food.

It’s not something I’d do, but I think the outrage on here is overplayed. BLW wastes far more food day to day than cake smashes.

DonkeyHohtay · 29/04/2019 07:26

It's vile, tacky and vulgar. Wasting food for the hell of it.

We've all got pictures of young children making a mess with their food. But making food specifically to be wasted is just so, so wrong.
