To think names are too similar?

DS1 is due in a few weeks and we’ve really struggled with names. DH likes Ewan but we worry it’s too similar to DH’s name: Huw. What do people think? DH has vetoed my favourite name ‘Eric’ as too similar to our daughter Merryn but that we’re less likely to say his name and Ewan together as he’ll be ‘daddy’.

I think Huw and Ewan fine and like Ewan better than Eric, but given that you seem to like Welsh names and the overall sound of Ewan why not go fir Ioan? That little bit different to both Huw and Ewan and sounds lovely with Merryn

pipanchew2 · 27/04/2019 16:18

Yes, we considered Ioan but don’t live in Wales so would be mispronounced all the time...

Just spell it Owen or Owain. It's the 'you' sound that's in Ewen and Huw you want to avoid.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 27/04/2019 16:25

For a parent and child it’s fine.

TigerBreadAddict · 27/04/2019 16:26

“Huw and Ewan” is v similar I think

Beachbodynowayready · 27/04/2019 16:28

Ew and Huwen after a few Wine?!

TixieLix · 27/04/2019 16:30

Ewan is more similar to Merryn than Eric is, surely?

Ated · 27/04/2019 16:45

Try Tom, Dick or Harry, more practical and easier to pronounce.

LavaLampLover · 27/04/2019 16:48

I was going to suggest Ieuan until you said you're outside of Wales.

Owen is cool. Caio?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 27/04/2019 16:49

I think it would be a bit much for siblings but probably fine for father and son. However if they’re going anywhere alone, or on Xmas cards it might sound a bit funny.....
“Is Pip coming?” “No, just Hewan Ewan’
“love from Pip, Hewan Ewan”

iolaus · 27/04/2019 17:05

Owen/Owain are completely different names to Ewan

But then I don't see Eric and Merryn as similar

It wouldn't stop me from using the name if I liked it - but if my partner really didn't want a name I wouldn't use it (at least for a first name) same as if he really loved a name but I hated it then it wouldn't get used

Butchyrestingface · 27/04/2019 17:16

DH has vetoed my favourite name ‘Eric’ as too similar to our daughter Merryn

Huh?? Confused

Fluggers · 27/04/2019 17:18

I've an Evan 🙂

NannyRed · 27/04/2019 17:43

Sorry pipanchew2 but people who have to ask the internet what to call their children really shouldn’t be parents.

If you’re grown up enough to shag and have babies, you’re grown up enough to name them.

Name your children, don’t ask the world to assist.

rabbitheadlights · 27/04/2019 17:48

@NannyRed seriously who has pissed on your chips today? You are being unnecessarily rude all over the boards

bridgetreilly · 27/04/2019 17:48

No one tell NannyRed about the whole baby naming forum on Mumsnet, then...

MountainDweller · 27/04/2019 17:49

Nanny there is a whole topic on baby names Grin

pip I like Owen too. I agree Huw and Ewan are too similar!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 28/04/2019 11:25
