MFP miscalculation or am I just dumb?

I've been using MFP to track calories pretty successfully but I've noticed over the last few days it looks like its been miscalculating, however my maths is appalling so maybe you can help me out? Today for example I have 1600 (goal) - 1503 (calories intake) - 338 (exercise- calculated off Fitbit, but I don't eat them back) and its saying I'm at -241 for the day?? How is that possible when I haven't even eaten my full goal calories?! Or AIBAM (am I being a moron!)

You have a deficit of 241, so you are under after the exercise is included Smile

Usually the deficit appears in green without the minus sign in front though, this is coming up in red?

Depending on how often you wear it you may want to enable negative calorie adjustment to get more accurate results. To do so follow the instructions at www.myfitnesspal.com

This is a negative deficit so isn't it calculated incorrectly (a bit like a double negative)?

Looking at it logically, you have eaten 97 calories fewer than planned and have burned off 338 exercising so the deficit is, in effect, 435 calories.

cornflakegirl · 26/04/2019 21:43

1503 + 338 = 1841 which would be 241 over, so it looks like the exercise has been entered with the wrong signage?

LosingLola · 26/04/2019 22:12

Your exercise is counting in reverse. It thinks you've done 338 less calories of exercise, so it thinks you haven't been as active as you should have been.

Teachtolive · 26/04/2019 22:15

@cornflakegirl I think you've hit on it there. I just went back in my mfp diary entries and previously exercise has been entered with a plus sign (so it looks like 1600 -1500 + 300 = 400 calories remaining). How the heck do I switch it back??

Sorry, cross posted with you @LosingLola, is it simply just a matter of me having a more inactive day than usual? Or is it a settings thing do you know?

You can turn off negative calories in the settings, so you'll be at 0 exercise calories for the day.

The reason this has happened is because you're less active today than usual. When you set MFP up, you entered how much you wanted to lose per week and it based your daily calorie intake on how active you said you are. Today you haven't met that activity level. It's fine if it's just a one off, but if today is your usual activities then you'll need to go and adjust the settings otherwise you won't lose as much weight as you want to.

@LosingLola thank you so much for explaining that! Yeah it's been a slow week, definitely need to be up and moving more!
