To think this isn’t brave it’s stupid

Recently near me someone died falling off a sheer drop at a natural beauty spot, this was very sad.
However despite helicopters arriving from the police, air ambulance and coast guard, someone felt the need to try and climb down to “help” all this meant was extra work for the coast guard who had to winch them off as all they managed to achieve was getting stuck in a dangerous place.
They’ve been heralded as brave by the local press. AIBU to think it’s not brave it’s stupid and glorifying it is just risky as it means more have-a-go heroes are going to do stupid things like this?!

I agree that's bloody stupid. The chances of the person surviving the fall would be pretty low to begin with so all the person did was add a potential second casualty to the situation.

What exactly did they think they would be able to do even if they had reached the person who fell? Even if the person had still been alive exactly what use would a non medically trained person with no equipment or drugs be in this situation?

I don't know the news story, but I know that if my loved one fell from a cliff - I would move heaven and earth to try and reach them, and be grateful to anyone else who also tried.
