Pelvic infection- what could it be?

Been having pelvic pain for a while, pain during sex and recently bleeding between periods. Went to the dr and they said its a pelvic infection. They could see the infection on the ultrasound and also whilst doing the swabs. Could it be anything other than a STI?

I think you can get PID- pelvic inflammatory disease. and that is different...but not sure. You might need antibiotics.

I had PID as a consequence of having the coil. It's not automatically an STI/D. Flowers

Erm, if you've been to a doctor and they diagnosed it, ultrasound and all, what makes you doubt the diagnosis?

I assume they gave you antibiotics, since it's an infection?

There are lots of organs in the pelvis, and three openings to the outside (if you're female). Infection can happen by any of those routes if there's contact with an infectious substance. It doesn't have to be sexually transmitted.

The following may not be your situation at all (I assume the doctor explained it?), but one of the commonest infections women get is E. coli bacteria from the colon taking up unwanted residence in either the vagina of the urethra (leading to the bladder). That, for instance, is not sexually transmitted! It's just a matter of not being careful to always wipe front to back.
