That some pedestrians are idiots

Before I start this I know a lot of drivers are utterly grim too, this isn’t a thread about them.

I do a lot of driving for work but feel I’ve noticed it loads this weekend, people just stepping into roads not looking either way, not waiting for crossings, staring at phones/or headphones in with no regard to what’s around them and the one that really really annoys me, running across very busy roads often dragging a small child by the hand to avoid walking another 50ft to use a pelican crossing. Angry

Saw a very very near miss this afternoon with someone stepping out in front of a cyclist while they were facing backwards talking to someone in a shop doorway?

Is it just me or are there some really fucking stupid people out there and it’s getting more common?

Its not just you. Someone I know was actually killed by a pedestrian stepping off a pavement without looking in front of her bike.

Well some are and some aren't. But preoccupation with mobile phones must contribute to this as so often I see people walking along staring down at phone totally distracted, a couple of times I've had to shout 'watch out' as they're about to bump into me. People are wired in to the point of obsession. Can be the same with drivers, mind you.

Try living in a tourist area- some people seem to think that as they are on a day out the rules around crossing roads dont apply Hmm

JenniferJareau · 22/04/2019 16:27

I see a lot of this recently. Men walking out into to road when 10 of us are waiting patiently to cross. They soon see the reason why none of us have crossed is because of constant traffic. They then have to step back then step back again to avoid the traffic and find themselves back on the pavement with the rest of us!

However I see drivers and cyclists being dicks often. Driver the other day drove over a crossing just before the green man flashed up, well after the red light had gone on. Same with a cyclist, along a pavement full of pedestrians, couldn't have given a shit about anyone else. I was tempted to do an Indiana Jones!

A lot of pedestrians are idiots. But we have no idea who's deaf, blind, has a learning disability or other diminished capacity and there are no criteria to be a pedestrian.

MerlinsScarf · 22/04/2019 16:37

Any hint of hot weather seems to bring out the worst of it. I walk more often than drive, so not coming from an anti-pedestrian viewpoint in the least, but it's like people have gone onto some kind of holiday mode. On Saturday there was someone stepping into traffic on every block of my route, plenty of crossings on those roads but obviously they didn't fancy use them.

happyhillock · 22/04/2019 16:38

Driver's can be idiot's to, a lot of them don't seem to know they have indicator's when there turning into a side street, i see this on a daily basis

Stressedout10 · 22/04/2019 16:39

I can't remember who did the study but a study was done into the correlation between smartphone ownership and head/face trauma. It turns out that as % of people who have smartphones increases so does the number of head/face trauma by the same % .
So no it's not just you

Lockheart · 22/04/2019 16:40

People looking at their phones and not paying attention are the worst. And I say that as neither a driver nor cyclist, but I see so many near misses because idiots are too busy staring at a screen.

Easterbunnynearlyhere · 22/04/2019 16:41

I nearly had a strike today in local carparks of jay walkers fuckwits...

Medicaltextbook · 22/04/2019 16:47

Indeed. I’m mostly a pedestrian as not safe to drive. As with every group there is stupidity, but you’d think grown adults (with no additional needs) particularly cyclists and pedestrians would know they are vulnerable road users. Walking head down looking a phone is a recipe for disaster.

CupcakeDrama · 22/04/2019 16:48

The worst are the ones that run out into the road with no care or consideration, just to catch a bus.

BMW6 · 22/04/2019 17:18

YANBU. I have seen some REALLY near misses when people (usually men) run across the very busy road nearby despite there being a pedestrian crossing a few feet away!
If they get themselves killed that's their lookout and it can only improve the gene pool - but I would really feel for the motorist or cyclist that hits them.
Utter wankers all.
