Following other recent threads, how important breakfast in dieting?

Every diet Ive ever been on says breakfast is important to fuel your body and kick start metabolism. Skipping breakfast can lead to a binge later in the day.

Thread about how do middle class women stay slim sees a lot of posters saying they skip breakfast - often in favour of coffee.

So how do these two schools match up?

Bullshit. Your body doesn’t give a shit what time you eat. There is no “kickstarting metabolism” it’s all a myth created by cereal companies.

I never eat breakfast and I’m slim.

The ‘you need breakfast to kick start your metabolism’ is bollocks unless of course you’re an athlete or training for something intense like an Olympic event. For most meer mortals that statement simply isn’t true.

To lose weight it’s all about calorie deficit. Less in, more out! So not eating breakfast, if you don’t want to will only help this.

There’s a lot of recent eveidence to show that skipping breakfast can actually be good for yuuv- particularly in respect of blood sugars and insulin. It’s called intermittent fasting.

However, some people can seem to manage it , some can’t. I have no problem skipping breakfast and not eating until about 1pm - although I’m not especially slim! However , my sister, who is very slim, can’t manage without breakfast as she’d feel faint and get the shakes by mid morning.

Breakfast puts weight on me like nothing else. If I only have a cup or two of tea instead I can keep going til about 2pm. If I eat breakfast I'm starving and craving lunch by 11.30am.

I tested the theory recently. I ate breakfast every day for one week (7 days) and by the end of that week I'd gained 5lb.

Wow that's really interesting!

CALORIE DEFICIT. All diet plans (WW, SW, Intermittent fasting) are all based around this simple principle but they don't want you to know that, because then you won't have to pay them loads of money.

If you want to eat Breakfast, do it, just don't over eat the rest of the day. If you can get away without it- therefore consuming less calories in the day - then knock yourself out.

I recommend all of you follow 'James Smith PT' on socials. He exposes all the BS in the diet industry.

If I eat breakfast I eat more during the day. I lost 3 stone last year and pretty much never ate breakfast. If I gain weight you can guarantee it coincides with a period of time where I have eaten breakfast, and therefore more in general. For me it does kickstart my metabolism- in that it gets my appetite revved up and hungry!

Butteredghost · 22/04/2019 11:05

That is an old theory that is well debunked. Some people may suit eating breakfast. In that case, great - go ahead. Others don't. If you are in the "naturally don't" column, don't force yourself to eat breakfast. It's just extra calories.
