AIBU to think that onion bahjis should be spicy

been out for the day came home sorted out dinner for OH and i just fancied onion bajhis and a dip for my tea so put in to the oven four Iceland takeaway ones, they looked lovely and when i went to eat them, they were the blandest bajhis i have ever tasted , there was absolutely no spices in them at all. so dissapointed especially as we live in an area where there is a high asian population and the local indian restaurant to us does super spicy ones that leave your lips tingling

all the ones ive tasted havent been spicy.

Persimmonn · 21/04/2019 20:35

Well, what do you expect from frozen food?

Honestly, make them yourself. they’re so easy and you can adjust the spices and chilli yourself. All you need is chick pea flour, onions, potatoes and spices.

RochelleGoyle · 21/04/2019 20:35

Well frozen ones from Iceland were never going to be a gourmet experience, we're they? Anyway, no - they're not spicy in my experience, more fragrant. So I'm afraid YABU.

Mapril · 21/04/2019 20:36

I think they're more oniony and crispy rather than hugely spicy. But yes, they shouldn't be bland

MaryBoBary · 21/04/2019 20:37

No not spicy. And if the ones from the takeaway are so good why didn’t you buy them?

TapasForTwo · 21/04/2019 20:37

Persimmon onion bhajis don't have potato in them.

soulrider · 21/04/2019 20:39

Don't think I've ever had a spicy onion bhaji. They're not bland but I wouldn't describe them as spicy

adaline · 21/04/2019 20:43

I've never had a spicy onion bahji before! They're tasty/fragrant but not spicy, and I'm very sensitive to spice.

@Persimmonn

"Well, what do you expect from frozen food?"
I'd expect that if any food had spices in it and was then frozen it would still taste spicy when cooked/reheated. If it didn't have spices in it and was then frozen then I wouldn't expect it to be spicy.

Not really relevent to whether onion bhajis should be spicy.

InadvertentlyBrilliant · 21/04/2019 20:47

Iceland curries are spicy and they are frozen.

CheshireChat · 21/04/2019 20:51

I've never had spicy ones, it's generally samosas which are spicier.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 21/04/2019 20:52

I also don't think onion bhajis are normally spicy (nor do I think they should be), but there's no inherent reason for frozen food not to be spicy.

MashedSpud · 21/04/2019 20:58

I use gram flour, sliced onions, chopped coriander, turmeric, fresh chopped green chillies and salt. Mix well, cover and leave to stand for 20 mins then add a little more flour if needed.

I make bite sized ones so they aren’t raw and squeeze lemon juice on them when cooked.

You can also grind up some washed red lentils to add to the mix for a slightly different texture and very thinly chopped potatoes.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 21/04/2019 21:00

Spicy-ish, as in tasty rather than hot. I don't think I've ever had one that made my lips tingle.

Persimmonn · 21/04/2019 21:31

I just had to check the recipe for onion Bhajis, they don’t have potato. Pakoras have potato in them and are infinitely better than bhajis imo.

SocksInPeril · 21/04/2019 21:37

Not hot spicy, but flavourable/aromatic spicy.

But I think all supermarket bhajis are like- frozen or fresh. Either pick up a couple from a takeaway or make your own

phoenixrosehere · 21/04/2019 21:48

Our fave Indian takeaway does them with a kick of spice and they are amazing as well as the rest of their food. Other Indian takeaways nearby don’t and their curries are bland in comparison. It has made us wonder if our fave is more authentic considering dp has been on trips to India and the food reminds him of what he had there.

isseywithcats · 21/04/2019 21:49

we had been on the motorbike all day main shops shut by the time we got back and other half having done the riding all day wouldnt go to the takeaway so i had to have what was in the freezer and i dont keep chick pea flour in as a staple, usually bahis have some flavour these were just no flavour whatsoever,
