What car with small budget? Help!

Needcoffeeimmediatley · 17/04/2019 16:34

DH car has just packed up (so broken it wouldn't be worth repairing) he's had to take my car to work Envy

Wasn't expecting to have to purchase a new vehicle at this second so only have a tiny budget of 3k.

I've been trawling through autotrader, eBay and gumtree.
The more I look the most discouraged I become.
He needs a car with a big boot and he does quits a lot of motorway driving.

Any suggestions, please throw them my way!

TIA

try here. i would bring someone who knows about cars (someone who can check the engine etc) with you (provided you don't know how of course) but its under 3k and looks like a decent car

Something like a 207sw.. Smallish car but biggish "expandable" boot

Boom45 · 17/04/2019 19:59

We spent about that on a second hand fiesta. Small but with a surprisingly roomy boot and my DH and i are both 6ft and it was pretty comfy on long journeys.
Also, with that budget I'd be looking for cars that are reliable and cheap to fix. It's not a lot to spend on a car and you don't want to buy something that's gonna cost you loads in repairs

Hyundai i30 around the 2010-12 mark. Love mine!

Fiveredbricks · 17/04/2019 20:02

Also - cheap to fix and very reliable!

Another vote for the Peugeot... we have the 308 estate.. ours is a 59 plate diesel, absolutely brilliant boot space (take the whole family camping) and the mpg is fantastic. You'd pick one up for that money and honestly I think it's been the best car we have had for cost and practicality!

How about a Mazda 6 ? I have had quite a few cars and this has been the most reliable one yet .

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'll look into your suggestions.

Yep, not a big budget unfortunately.

We've got a few big expenses coming up in the next few months so I'm thinking if we can get something half decent (and most importantly reliable 🤞🏻) for now, we can then sell it and add some more towards getting something newer for him, he's self employed so it's really crucial he's mobile and not pinching sharing mine Grin

Hyundai i20 has a roomy boot for a hatchback and wouldn't be terrible for motorway driving, seems to have good saftey features for the money. Insurance is cheap too, so I can't imagine you'd struggle to sell it on as a first car for someone.

My car cost 1500. It was 12 years old and that was a lot of money for me. Actually the most money I’ve ever managed to save in my life. I’m currently looking to save/sell my car so I can upgrade. 3 grand is what I’m aiming for too.
I’ve looked at fords as they are reliable and cheap to run.
