I can smell gas

Not an AIBU, but posting for traffic.

I went outside earlier and thought I could smell gas but kind of shrugged it off. Just been outside again and I can definitely smell it.

It doesn't smell in the house at all. But when I open the door and lean out into the garden the smell is very strong.

I'm not sure what to do in this situation? Our house is semi-detached and I'd have thought that if it was coming from next door I would be able to smell it in the house.

What should I do? It's making me really quite anxious and there is only me and DD home.

Call the gas board?

brizzlemint · 16/04/2019 23:50

Phone the gas emergency line on 0800 111999 and don't switch any lights or electrical equipment/sockets on or off.
Use the landline.

MsJaneAusten · 16/04/2019 23:50

Phone the gas board!

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 16/04/2019 23:51

If it's very strong I'd ring the gas emergencies number for advice 0800 111 999.

DramaAlpaca · 16/04/2019 23:51

As above ^^ You need to call the gas emergency people.

Toseland · 16/04/2019 23:52

Check with your neighbour, I did this and it turned out to be cat repellant spray she’d used.

Flyinga · 16/04/2019 23:53

We ended up without gas for 2 weeks last year as there was a gas leak that the lower flat reported. Pretty tough two weeks, but they had to replace all the pipes in the building as they were corroded.
I'm assuming the info Brizzlemint gave is correct.
If not, google the 24 hour gas emergency number.

StayAwhile · 16/04/2019 23:59

Thank you! Found the key with number on, am going to ring them now

Ring the gas emergency line as mentioned.

This happened to me a while back and I was hugely anxious and embarrassed about ringing them.

It took an hour for the guy to come. Turns out there had been lots of reports across the city and it must have been a passing gas cloud?!

He was great though, very reassuring, and did a thorough check of my gas meter and appliances just in case.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 17/04/2019 00:03

Absolutely call the gas board.

I smelled gas a few doors from my house and reported it. Half the road ended up being dug up due to a gas leak in an external pipe.

It happens!

brizzlemint · 17/04/2019 00:34

I'm assuming the info Brizzlemint gave is correct.

I should be, I've had to phone them mysef on that number but I checked it on the Transco website first - they run the emergency service for all the gas companies. Not sure why OP has been looking for the key!

Flyinga · 17/04/2019 00:43

Well when she gets through I'm sure they'll talk her through the safety stuff.

Rottencooking · 17/04/2019 02:59

Ooo what happened?
