to expect NOT to have to pay to have my DD1's glasses lenses thinned....

I normally go to D&A for the kid's glasses as I find they have a good range and they don't charge to have the lenses thinned, but today I went to Specsavers and was shocked to discover that they charge £30 to thin the lenses, so I walked out and drove 3 miles to D&A. The man in D&A said they don't charge for thinning as it would make glasses very heavy and dd1 needs to have her lenses thinned.

I know I was too. I said to the lady in specsavers that I have never paid to have their lenses thinned in D&A, she just shrugged and said 'well its £30'

thats crap!

dd3 lenses are thinned slightly, they take 3 weeks to do

but they know her in stephenson and parker so wont move from there.

Thanks, worth knowing as dd's lenses are approaching the size at which they will need to be thinned. No, YANBU.

DD1 and DS both have a very strong presc. so if the lenses are not thinned, they will be very thick.

We've never paid to have lenses thined at Vission Express. DS is a +6 (?) They do have to send them away, though, so we don't have them in an hour. It's usually 2-3 days.

SGK, we have had this problem for years (and no optician near us who will thin the lenses without cost). We qualify for vouchers but find it is cheaper to get our glasses from USA via the web - think the site is 39dollarglasses.com (although there are a few about now).

It's really crap IMO that dd1 is expected to wear non-thinned lenses - they would be like the bottom of milk bottles and incredibly heavy

Vision express also do thin lenses free for kids. Unfortunately DD's lenses are so weird they still have to be sent away rather than done while you wait but most kids' glasses can be done within the hour.

I have to have my lenses thinned.
I am so blond that if I didn't they would be literally like pint glass bottoms

that you would ever have to pay to have a childs lenses thinned, thats ridiculous.

We never paid to have our sons thinned in Specsavers, only ever paid £10 for the anti scratch coating. They even let me use his voucher against the cost of his contact lenses now we have changed to these.

We've always used D&A and always waited a few days for glasses. DD just uses the ones she has been using for 6 months (she's on 6-monthly check-ups) until they arrive.

It's not a big deal, really, waiting a few days.

we've used specsavers for dd's glasses and not paid extra to have them thinned, and dd's lenses have to be thinned otherwise she would look like mr mcgoo.

wonder if its a new thing, haven't used them for a year now as we moved and don't live near a branch anymore

i am really suprised as we got dd's glasses from specsavers and they were thinned for no cost. (we now go to d&a as nearr)

I like D&A, they are friendly and know the kids well. I only went to Specsavers as we have moved and D&A is a bit far now.

I actually stopped going to Specsavers about 3 years ago after they told me that I couldn't have any more repairs on the kids glasses, unless I paid!! It was at a time when Dd1 kept grabbing DS's glasses and bending them.. so I stopped using them. Specsavers ov. don't like me!!

D&A are good they repair all dd's glasses and didn't bat an eye when I said she needed a new pair as she had thrown hers in a lake.

Well, in theory you are only entitled to basic plain frames and ordinary lenses on the NHS for a child; if your optician gives you more than that it's for the goodwill I think.

Ours (small local chain) is very tolerant and lets DS2 get the silly frameless specs he insisted on having repaired every 3 months or so; but then the rest of us also go there for specs and contact lenses so I guess we pay for him
