Can anyone recommend an unputdownable novel in welsh?

I am trying to resurrect my Welsh, last spoken properly 30 years ago. It was always a ‘second language’ but I was confident and bilingual to all intents and purposes, after attending a welsh language school for 7 years. Brains are amazing things and I know It’s all in there somewhere (I can follow TV and radio) but I’ve lost the confidence to speak and the ability to retrieve vobabulary. I’d like a novel that’s not highbrow, with a good story, to get me started again.

What about the Harry Potter series? Ok, so some of the vocab will be special but if you know the stories they'd be an easy way back in to the language.

time I’d rather something aimed at adults but not highbrow that I can get my teeth into - maybe a detective story?

Ok so disclaimer I'm not Welsh and I can't read welsh

I did read a great book years ago by a Welsh writer it was called The Long Dry by Cynan Jones, I reckon it's probably available in Welsh.

O! Tyn y Gorchudd by Angharad Price. Only book I’ve ever cried at. You can buy it as a Welsh English parallel text if it helps (The Life of Rebecca jones in English)

I hardly read any welsh but I am fluent. I wouldn't read a translation.
I would look at anything by Daniel Owen as they're classics - you can get learner's versions if you prefer, but I don't think you'll need to.
If you have a dictionary handy it will probably help if your welsh is a bit stiff.
I have reread the Lleifior (I. Ff. Elis) books many a time.

Figmentofmyimagination · 05/04/2019 20:01

Tyn y Gorchudd it is. I like the sound of something that makes you cry.

I know Cynan Jones, Barton. As far as I’m aware his books aren’t available 8n aw,each, but they are great.
When 8 was learning, I read Bethan Gwanas’ Blodwdn Jones novels - a bit like Bridget Jones. Quite simple language, but entertaining.

Ffydd Gobaith Cariad by Llwyd Owen maybe? (Note - haven't finished it but reviews sound good?)

Inc by Manon Steffan Ros is short and quite sweet. 1.99 on Kindle so worth a look?

Babynut1 · 05/04/2019 21:58

Following this! My Welsh is good and I speak it daily. But haven’t read and barely written in welsh for 20 years and would like to read some Welsh books again x

Babynut1 · 05/04/2019 22:00

Only the first Harry Potter book has ever been translated into Welsh so prob not worth starting those as you won’t be able to read them all x

Ithinkthatsenough · 06/04/2019 00:25

Bethan Gwanas’ books, i enjoyed Gwrach y Gwyllt
Lots of praise for Llyfr Glas Nebo as well

BloodsportForAll · 06/04/2019 00:30

I'm afraid my favourite Welsh book is Weithiau Hoff O Gwylion Fel Pelen (I'm sure I've gotten that wrong, this is from memory and I'm not a Welsh native). And Mae Tywydd Elfed. They were my youngest favourite books, I still have them 💚

OMG. Just read this as an 'unmovable 'put down' ' in welsh Hmm. Was going to ask dp as he used to go out with a welsh girl so I expect he'd picked up a few choice phrases!

EBearhug · 06/04/2019 00:56

Blodwen Jones drove me up the bloody wall - but then I wasn't keen on Bridget Jones, either.

I would have a browse on Y Llofa's website and see if anything looks interesting.

We're reading a Lois Arnold one in class at the moment - Sgwp!
