Ellbell - thanks for that, helpful. But why etc. and e.g. when etc. is abbreviation of two words as well et cetera? I don't care how complex things are but I dislike inconsistencies.

Ellbell · 13/07/2007 12:46

But 'etc.' is only an abbreviation of 'cetera'. 'Et' is just 'et', iyswim! In the past, 'etc.' was often written as 'et c.' with a space, but again it has become so much a part of 'normal' language (and so few people now read Latin) that it has come to be accepted as a single abbreviation 'etc.'.

I thought it was violoncello.

You're right, UD - it is.

I played the flute, what would I know ?

Should Mumsnet not be Mums''net -- one possessive apostrophe for Mums' plus one to indicate that 'inter' has been omitted from 'internet'?

Ellbell · 13/07/2007 18:54

I think that might be an apostrophe too far!
