To stay off from work if...

My child has hand foot and mouth and impetigo.

My partner and I don’t have it... yet. My partner will be at home with him anyway, but I don’t want to spread anything to colleagues...

If you partner is staying at home to look after your child, then there is absolutely no need for you to stay off as well. I'm surprised you're even considering staying off work.

If everyone stayed off work ‘just in case’ no one would be at work.

HF&M whilst being contagious is not a reason to stay off work. Kids don't need to stay off school with it unless it's affecting them badly. You only need to stay off with impetigo if you have it, not a family member.

Agreed, if everyone stayed off work because of exposure to illness, no one would ever be in.

YABU. You'd never go to work if you stay off for every illness kids get.

So you don't have symptoms but you want to stay home in case you pass on something that you don't actually have yet? To be honest that sounds like you fancy a day off and you're trying to dress it up as concern for your colleagues. I'd be very surprised if your workplace accepted it as a valid reason for absence.

I had hand foot and mouth from my daughter and still went in. Was just very carefully with hygiene.

It might be too late, you might have spread it already but not yourself come out in a rash etc.

I dont think work will give you 1-3 weeks off to see if you get the same thing.

Buy some hand gel & hope for the best.

It’s not just that it would be unreasonable, it would be peculiar.
“Just in case I transmit a germ that I have been exposed to but am not suffering with” is not on anyone’s list of legitimate excuses. You have probably also been exposed to numerous other illnesses while out and about; you just don’t know about those.

Of course you don't need to stay off 'just in case'! I rarely catch any of those childhood illnesses & I work in a Primary School as well as having kids of my own! As long as you have childcare sorted, you need to go to work, otherwise you're definitely not being reasonable.

Last year an email was sent round for one of the managers who as a precaution was sent home because he was in this position. I liked that idea but clearly that’s unreasonable!
