I have mine later on this afternoon. Never had one before and to say I’m bricking it would be putting it politely mild.

Mine was absolutely fine. Over before I knew it.

Can't say it's a wonderful experience, but as soon as it's over, you are done - no lasting pain or horrible feelings you get from other procedures.
I wouldn't do one without anaesthetic! but that means you can't' drive yourself.

People feel various level of discomfort, if you are the lucky one you won't even remember a thing after.

ShartOfGold · 19/03/2019 15:12

Thanks both. I’m terrified.
Doesn’t help that I’ve got a terrible headache from not eating or drinking all day

It's fine. You're sedated, so don't know a thing about it.

intrigued2018 · 19/03/2019 15:14

@ShartOfGold - it isn't the most pleasant of things but the prep and waiting around before it worse than the actual procedure. I have to have one every yr! Good luck x

ShartOfGold · 19/03/2019 15:22

Thanks! I can’t explain how scared I am... I’m shaking! I’ll be surprised if I actually let them go ahead and do it.
My appointment isn’t until 5 so I’ve had all day to work myself up...

You'll be fine, I have only had two, first one with anaesthetic but the second one without which was much better for me.
Ever so slightly uncomfortable when the tube is inserted but other than that nothing.
Also really interesting to watch what's going on inside.
Best of luck, don't worry, you'll be eating Cake before you know it!

nellyitsme · 19/03/2019 16:06

I had one 3 weeks ago and like you I really scared. I was worried I'd choke or gag and I was panicked about what they'd find.

It's was fine I did gag when it went in. You'll be fine. Everyone was so kind and gentle and explained what was happening. Even us patients formed a little group with the more experienced helping to reassure the novices

They found that my oesophagus was inflamed and maybe I've an ulcer. They gave Omeprazole and explained everything to me. My symptoms have virtually gone and I'm feeling much much better. I've had to change my diet and the way I eat

I go back for another endoscopy to check up in two weeks time and I'm not so scared at all.

Think of it as like going to the dentist or having a smear test - a bit uncomfortable but it's over quickly

Thank you all for replying. I had it done this evening after 2 hours waiting around. I had the sedation (which I admit didn’t seem to do much until after it was finished, typical!)
It wasn’t pleasant but it wasn’t too bad, could breathe just fine but the retching was terrible!
Thanks everyone for putting me at ease (slightly)

well done!

Now I can be honest, it was the very worst experience in my entire life Grin I was kind of expecting to force myself to swallow a tube , instead of having that thing forced down my throat and I felt I couldn't breath.
I really struggled after the procedure for days.

I am glad most people have a much lighter experience!

ShartOfGold · 19/03/2019 21:40

I wasn’t told to swallow either! They just sort of shoved it in Hmm
And the tube was ALOT bigger than I was expecting! The nurses were lovely though... the doctor not so much.

Thanks for saving your bad experience until after I’d had it Grin

I have the worst sore throat now too!

OP posts:
thedisorganisedmum · 19/03/2019 21:50

oh, sorry about the sore throat, I think I avoided it that - hope it's gone by tomorrow. But the relief that's it's over, and it doesn't last that long thank god.
