I heard that in 1835 John Stuart Mill's housemaid burnt the manuscript of Thomas Carlyle's The French Revolution, and he needed to rewrite the whole thing. There are records of this in lots of history books, but I can't find any record of what happened to the girl. I keep wondering what happened to her. Does anyone know? It's such a weird story, but I would love to know her side. Have looked at lots of biographies of both writers and found zilch about the fate of the poor housemaid.
Please can anyone help?
