I was only in 15 minutes and they must have opened and closed till number 5 about 4 times. Then they opened till number 6. But then closed it again once it has served one person. Drives me insane.

It’s done automatically when the queues get over a certain length.

But what it seems to mean in reality is one poor staff member spends their whole shift walking to and from the till

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 10/03/2019 15:49

I have just observed that very thing happen on till no 6 at Aldi. It getsmy goat to. Do you live in ST5? Grin

PristineCondition · 10/03/2019 15:49

Staff are not allowed to be inactive so they jump off to stock shelves and shite

EssentialHummus · 10/03/2019 15:53

What they all said^. I now mainly go to the Lidl nearby that has a self-checkout.

TheQueef · 10/03/2019 15:55

Staff aren't allowed to stay on tills with no queues.

Thisisnotadrill · 10/03/2019 15:57

This doesn’t annoy me but having my weekly shop lobbed at me at 500 items per second does.

Oysterbabe · 10/03/2019 16:01

Our new Lidl has a self checkout and it makes me so happy, especially as it feels like I'm the only fucker who uses it and most people will join a queue rather than use it.

HilaryBriss · 10/03/2019 16:04

SpongeBob I was in the ST5 one in Friday, went behind a woman on till 6 and was told that it was closing so went and joined the queue at another till - had just unloaded my shopping into the conveyor belt and they announced that bloody till 6 was opening! Why couldn't they just have served me in the first place???

DrDreReturns · 10/03/2019 16:05

Doesn't bother me. Just go to one that's open when you come to pay.

FuzzyPuffling · 10/03/2019 16:08

I'd rather there was one long queue for the tills and people took it in turns with no pushing in and running to a newly opened till

ideasofmarch · 10/03/2019 16:22

I've got so used to the light-speed checkout in Aldi that anywhere else seems painfully slow now!

Biancadelrioisback · 10/03/2019 16:26

I only shop at Lidl and they're the same (btw, why doesn't mine have a sell checkout?!) But it's great if you're in the queue and suddenly a till opens and you get there first!

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 10/03/2019 16:27

WHAT THE FUCK- lidl have self checkouts? Where are these mystical checkouts located?

ChicCroissant · 10/03/2019 16:27

I tend to use the self-service till at Lidl (I just get a few items generally) and it does put me off our much nearer Aldi that I still have to queue for the tills and the lack of giant fresh croissants

I also find it a bit irritating that they say 'till number blah opening shortly' so you dump your stuff on there because the assistant at the till you are waiting at says to go and they take ages to get there!

EmeraldShamrock · 10/03/2019 16:28

Doesn't bother me as i know the staff are packing out stock.
It is also to keep prices lower.
They expect a lot from their staff but are well paid for the efficient work they do.
I hate other store now they are so slow on the till.
I just fire it in the trolley and pack at my leisure by the shelf.

SimoneStrasser · 10/03/2019 16:31

I set myself a challenge to pack my trolley quicker than the Aldi can chuck it at meGrin. I once got a comment of “ you’re a quick packer” , quite right too , it’s about the important things in life Grin.

TheHobbitMum · 10/03/2019 16:33

I'm am Aldi manager and it's essentially to keep prices down. We have bare minimum staff so whenever a colleague and jump off the tills there is always something that needs doing, either stock out or tiding cardboard away.

Keeping bare minimum of tills open is more productive for us but I can imagine it's odd when standing in the queue :)

quittinaeete · 10/03/2019 16:33

Love a Lidl with a self service.

Hate how slow Lidl and Aldi staff are these days. They've stopped pushing people's shopping back onto the trolly and do it far far slower since they expanded.

BorsetshireBlew · 10/03/2019 16:35

This is how Aldi and Lidl get to keep their prices low. If you want good service go to sainsbos and spend 30% more!

RussellSprout · 10/03/2019 16:38

It annoys me when they put your shopping through the tills like its some sort of land speed race.

I do a basket shop and deliberately take as long as I like to put the shopping in my bags, so that it piles up on the side and they have to actually stop and let me pack.

MirandaWest · 10/03/2019 16:41

It does slightly annoy me that the message comes over the tannoy that till number 5 is opening and then there’s a message that someone needs to go and open till 5. Why isn’t it the other way round?

SoupDragon · 10/03/2019 16:43

let me pack.

You're meant to do that at the shelf, not the till.

Rafflesway · 10/03/2019 16:43

I love the fast checkout at Aldi!

Can't abide slow checkouts now so only use self service at other supermarkets.

EssentialHummus · 10/03/2019 16:44

Whynham · 10/03/2019 16:45

Don't get too excited about the Lidl self checkouts because they are the slowest machines in the world, It's like they've bought a shitty knock-off version of self serve checkouts.

Bip... Puts item on scales... Waits 10 years... Next item please.

I can still hear "please take your reciept" as I'm halfway across the car park.
