Have a friend who's DD has her own mobile phone with Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp, YT on it.

Mother doesn't monitor the social media use and thinks this is fine and often condones her DD using it on her SM pages.

AIBU or is this just ridiculous?

Of course it's ridiculous. But surprisingly common.

Seahorsey · 09/03/2019 18:25

YANBU

7 year olds don’t need that shit
I’m 32 and decided I don’t need that shit 😂

alwaysncxx · 09/03/2019 18:25

@SileneOliveira I'm really shocked at how common it seems

Passmethecrisps · 09/03/2019 18:26

It’s completely ridiculous. Of course it is

Sexnotgender · 09/03/2019 18:26

YADNBU. The mother is a moron.

Unsupervised YouTube access at 7Confused

arethereanyleftatall · 09/03/2019 18:27

Well, rather obviously yanbu. I'm not sure why anyone would disagree. I don't know anyone whose 7 year old has a phone, some kids round here get them at 10 as they walk to school alone.

Passmethecrisps · 09/03/2019 18:27

I don’t know any 7 year olds with their own phone and social media access! I know a 6 year old who I think has a phone so maybe she has social media access as well. But really?! Is it actually common?

alwaysncxx · 09/03/2019 18:28

Also like to add she lets her DD upload videos of herself on YouTube and she has her own channel.

OP posts:
arethereanyleftatall · 09/03/2019 18:29

What is the point of your post? So that everyone joins in to sneer and judge your friend?

Passmethecrisps · 09/03/2019 18:29

Have you actually seen it?

I remember being astonished when my Aunty allowed my cousin Facebook at 10. I was agog. It just seems so weird

alwaysncxx · 09/03/2019 18:31

@arethereanyleftatall because I don't have DC yet and thought I was being unreasonable.

I know it's more common for children to have phones and social media access but didn't know at what ages

OP posts:
alwaysncxx · 09/03/2019 18:31

@Passmethecrisps seen what sorry? The YT vids? Yes I have

OP posts:
killpop · 09/03/2019 18:32

Ridiculous. Yes kids are getting younger when they get phones, but they should be being monitored and these apps have an minimum age rating for a reason.

arethereanyleftatall · 09/03/2019 18:33

Ok. My own experience is some children start having a phone at ten or eleven. But it will only have text/phone functions on it.

Passmethecrisps · 09/03/2019 18:35

Some of the kids I know either get a phone during their final year of P7 when they might be going to after school things or most it is the summer before secondary school.

Catscratchclub · 09/03/2019 18:40

It might look to other people like Ds has his own fb page, as I tag a profile in his name worh photos - it’s because I’m separated from his dad and I didn’t want him or his family on my personal profile! It’s linked to some games I play because I don’t want to spam my fb, so it prob looks active too. Ds hasn’t got a clue about it though!

He has an iPad he can text his dad / me / grandma and aunty on as well. No other numbers. Obviously because we are a separated family, this wouldn’t be needed in all homes, but it works in ours.

On paper what you are saying sounds bad - but it could literally be my child. Stop being so judgmental!

Catscratchclub · 09/03/2019 18:40

I should add - Ds is 7!

leccybill · 20/03/2019 23:06

I'm shocked to find a few classmates of my DD who are 8/9 have their own Youtube channels.
In my opinion, they are too young to be truly aware of the risks.
