Is this friend safe to drive?

I have a friend aged about 80 years old. He has been showing clear signs of dementia for some time. DVLA told him to see his GP regarding his fitness to drive. The doctor asked him if he still wanted to drive and he said yes, backed up by his wife. The doctor then authorised his licence renewal. AIBU to think that this is not a satisfactory way of assessing fitness to be in control of a vehicle.

YABU. GPs follow strict guidelines from the DVLA and are liable if they make the wrong decision. No GP in their right mind would say someone was fit to drive unless they were absolutely sure.
