Came out of the blue from a relative we hadn't seen since we were young. Am tempted not to spend a penny and just invest

For £250k definitely come and ask an anonymous forum instead of speaking to a financial advisor.

AnimalBabysitter · 05/03/2019 16:55

Do you have DCs? Private education, university costs...

FriarTuck · 05/03/2019 16:56

Invest

TheMuminator2 · 05/03/2019 16:56

2 children

25% on fast cars, 25% on exotic holidays, 25% on designer clothes, and with the 25% left....why don't you just treat yourself.

Start a smallholding, get goats. Give up work for a few years and see the world.

(I love virtually spending other people’s money in frivolous ways. Get some good financial advice and secure your long term future is probably the thing to do.)

fromnowhere · 05/03/2019 16:58

Housing surely? Single biggest cost for most people. If you're lucky enough to be mortgage free, then i would look to invest a massive chunk £200k (?) In retirement planning/ pension investments and use the other £50k to have a holiday, treat your kids or upgrade your car etc?

ScreamingValenta · 05/03/2019 16:58

I'd spend up to £50k on doing up my house and save/invest the remainder.

Soubriquet · 05/03/2019 16:59

Personally? I would buy a house outright for myself. If you don’t need a house and have no other debts, I would put a lump sum into a bank account for each child so they can get a mortgage when they are older.

The rest I would have a nice holiday and then what is left, I would save for retirement

Loads of friends on Mumsnet 😉

7salmonswimming · 05/03/2019 17:00

Invest it in me.

I mean, you did ask Confused

mimibunz · 05/03/2019 17:00

Holiday flat in south of France or Florida?

BirthdayCakes · 05/03/2019 17:01

I've said it before, I'll say it again - beach hut and a Rolls Royce.

Nodancingshoes · 05/03/2019 17:02

I'd pay off my mortgage, buy a new car and go to Disney World. Enjoy x

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 05/03/2019 17:03

I would mull over the situation on a luxurious cruise of somewhere sunny and warm.

Ginger1982 · 05/03/2019 17:04

Pay off your mortgage if you can and if any left make some home improvements or have a holiday.

TheMuminator2 · 05/03/2019 17:04

^^ sounds like a good start

Llamas. Just llamas.

250,000 £1 lottery scratch cards.

You might only win back 50K, but you'll have a lot of fun.

recrudescence · 05/03/2019 17:08

Impossible to say without knowing your age, income, dependents, marital status etc, etc. Agree with others - get some good, professional advice.

Hittapotamus · 05/03/2019 17:08

Buy a house outright? You'd get a 2 bed box in my area Sad

I would buy a newer car that would last. Pay my mortgage down to be manageable. Go on a lovely summer holiday. Invest 2/3 to 3/4 via a financial advisor I had thoroughly researched.
