to think they have left

Colleague recently went off sick. A more senior colleague in the company took on their role. I asked my line manager today if x the more senior colleague was now permanently in this position as I understand they are already in another position within the company or if it was still temporary. My line manager replied and said at this time he did not know and all he know was that x was covering that position at this time and he did not know if or how long it would continue.

Why do you think they've left, rather than gone on long term sick?

DoneLikeAKipper · 27/02/2019 18:06

What’s your AIBU? Does this impact you or your job?

Singlenotsingle · 27/02/2019 18:06

Could be anything. Maybe that person has gone off sick and no one knows if or when they will be fit enough to come back.

YABU for thinking it's any of your business. The individual does not report to you, their role is being covered the reason for, and expected duration of, their absence is their personal business.

I’m not asking to be unkind and I got on really well with them. I’m just curious.

Someone's gone off sick

It happens all the time everywhere.

It's a bit of a leap to think they've left their job.

User300 · 27/02/2019 18:33

I just thought the wording my line manager used indicated that they had left.

At least they’re being covered. My line manager is “off sick” but everyone knows it’s really gardening leave as she “resigned” and hasn’t been seen since. Her responsibilities are meant to be being covered by her manager but she’s up to her eyeballs despite doing her best so there’s a sizeable gap and chaos is gradually ensuing.

Annelovesgilbert hope things get sorted at your work place soon.

the job is a job I would be interested in applying for if this person has left. I’m not sure if it’s acceptable to ask my line manager further information.
