No money for resent for friend

My friends birthday is Monday. We are all going on a night out on Saturday. It is really really a stretch for me to go Saturday but as a result I can't afford to buy her a gift, I feel so bad she always buys me a lovely gift I can get her something but it will be a week later. Is it cheeky to go on night out albeit frugally and explain to be that I am sorry but money is really tight?

Do you usually buy her a gift? I tend to thing that unless it is a "big birthday" then people don't expect gifts.

Oops can't edit title..yes we do normally, even something small but I really can't stretch it just feels rude to go on a night out but not be able to get a gift.

If she’s a good friend then she should understand. Alternatively tell her your order is delayed, and it should be here by next weekend. Although I do not condone telling fibs.

Have the night out on soft drinks only and bake her a birthday cake?

Fibberty cake is a nice idea actually! Thanks!
