To moan about my holidays getting rejected at work

I have 2 weeks already booked off in June. I wanted to add an extra week sonl I can be more flexible with flights. I was told I can't have the Monday as already 2 people off in my department. Ok fair enough... I then check the holiday rota to see alternate dates and notice there are some days booked, with at least 12 weeks notice (which I'm giving for my days) where there are already 3 people from my department with the same dates.

Am I being unreasonable to go to HR before my shift today and ask WTF is going on?

I would not really be allowed more than two weeks off and I’m expected to make sure there is adequate cover.
So I think YABU - most people have similar restrictions.

Why not discuss this inconsistency with your line manager? I don't see why you'd go straight to HR.

Gizlotsmum · 20/02/2019 08:12

I think you could go to hr and ask for clarity on minimum staffing levels (can 3 people be off or not?) What you do next depends on their answer. Is the time you requested a busier time for the company? Could you have a day at the start to give you more flex with flights that way? Or is it the more than 2 weeks which is the issue?

HogMother · 20/02/2019 08:12

Those other days may be more specific requests, and random single days where as you’re asking for the full third week, for no reason other than to give you time either side of a two week holiday. I had to write to my manager to request three weeks off for my own wedding and honeymoon.
I’d just book a holiday in the time you have off to be honest. Pick your battles

SummerHouse · 20/02/2019 08:13

I would take the week from Tuesday and think no more of it. Midweek flights are the best deals in the main. Also nothing finer than going in for a Monday knowing you are off on your hols from there. Smile

Sorry just realised it's the week after you want to tag on not the week before. Confused

Damonlufc88 · 20/02/2019 08:15

The week before there are already too many people off. I will cancel days once I have my holiday booked, just waiting on my wife's dates first. My line manager is on holiday for 2 weeks, this and next. We have a shift co ordinater who sorts staff holiday requests. Work vaireis so we can't say were busy or not. I'm mostly annoyed about the inconsistency

You should try working at Tesco at the minute , booking holidays in that place is a nightmare .

crocsaretoocoolforschool · 20/02/2019 08:19

I'd be annoyed you are holding onto dates tbh

Someone else might get theirs rejected because you are blocking out weeks

I've never worked anywhere where you could book 3 weeks off without it being exceptional circumstances or you had 'bought' extra holiday dates

KitKat1985 · 20/02/2019 08:22

Hmm tricky. We're supposed to have only a certain amount of people off at once on holiday too, especially in the summer when everyone wants time off, but my manager will be a bit flexible on this in certain circumstances (e.g, someone starts and already has a holiday booked, or someone needs to take short-notice annual leave to cover childcare etc).

If I'm honest if you've already got 2 weeks booked you should have enough flexibility to cover booking flights.
