To ask how you’ve decorated your fireplace alcoves?

I currently have 2 bookcases on either side and I’ve had enough of them as they become a dumping ground for toys, various hats/gloves, letters and other crap.

I’ve looked on Pinterest but every picture has flipping bookcases or shelves. I’ll be happy with shelves high up so the kids can’t get to them. But what could I have on the floor for the kids board games and “crap”?

We’re going to paint the room a creamy white colour, are feature walls still a thing? Could I paint the fireplace and alcoves a darker colour? Not brave enough for dark blue, so I was thinking a light beige colour?

I have dark brown leather sofas.

You've put this in AIBU, you have no BU. Put it in the diy section.

You're welcome ☺️

Do you feel clever now?

We have shelfs in one and a nice chair in the other. If your going to have a different colour I think you need to be brave, dark blue would look fab

I'm afraid ours are very boring, as the room isn't that large, but we like to spend our time in it. Larger alcove has a desk in it, and the smaller one has the TV and a shelf undernearth. The only "decorative" element is that both have nice wall lamps.

IF you wanted/needed storage space without the cluttered look of open shelves, you could always go for alcove cupboards, like the ones in this picture.

We have a chest of drawers in ours, hides all the crap 😂 would that work? You could have shelves above

CosyToast · 12/02/2019 12:00

BadlyAgedMemes, we crossposted, that's exactly what I'd do! Mine are drawers instead of cupboards, but I love that picture 😍

Guilttrippy · 12/02/2019 12:15

I think I like the idea of cupboards with shelves above. I want to keep the shelves up high away from the kids, because all their nicknack toys end up on there.

Would one cupboard on one side look odd? Because our sofa would block off the other one

What about chests that can double as benches? Can still be used for storage and additional seating

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/02/2019 12:55

We've got a book case in one and the TV in the other. The bookcase is used to display my frog collection rather than books but we kept it as it has cupboards at the bottom to hide things!

We have the tv in one and a large cupboard in the other which the tortoise table sits on.
