To ask what law allows a lorry to block road

Travis Perkins lorry blocking road in village. I said to one of the men that he can’t just block the road like that, people need to get through. He said “actually we can. Check the law”. I said what about an ambulance and he said he’d move for one (although how he could whilst unloading a digger I don’t know). I was pretty cross as he kept me waiting for a while but I’d like to know if he was right. Anyone any idea?

Realistically speaking, delivery lorries do have the block the road sometimes don't they? Annoying as it is.

I know, it was just his insistence that he was allowed to by law that exacerbated my irritance. That and he was making me late. Luckily for nothing hugely important.

I mean, unless I was stuck there for more than 5-10 minutes I wouldn't speak to them about it. It takes a few minutes etc. To unload.

What was it he was driving? A Hiab?

A quick Google brings up a document from 2010: "It is an offence for a goods vehicle to park illegally or to cause an obstruction, but it is not necessarily illegal to park on the highway in a residential area. Control of parking on local roads is a matter for local traffic authorities."

However, this relates to parking. If the lorry was actively involved in the delivery of something then I suppose a different law could apply.

Mustgorunning · 23/04/2021 22:19

Road traffic act, 1998, section 19

Perhaps he should have got Hermes to chuck it over the fence as he was going past...

Quite hoping OP doesn't need this anymore😂😂😂
Mustgorunning · 23/04/2021 22:42

Haha true; but better late than never

luxxlisbon · 23/04/2021 22:42

I can’t understand why you would actually go up to the driver and complain to them while a digger was being unloaded. They were obviously in the middle of something that needed to be done and all moaning to them did was make it take longer.

LaPampa · 23/04/2021 22:51

Thanks @Mustgorunning - I think that section just refers to verges which is not what this lorry was parked on!

Embarrassingly I read this thread again today and thought oh good someone as pedantic as me and was sad to see it was my own thread from several years ago.

Oh my god😱😱😱 OP.

That's funny. I remember someone mentioning a zombie thread asking about some buggy, where years later op came back to recommend the buggy not realising it's their thread🙈
