To think it shouldn’t take the GP this long

Midwife last Monday and Physio last Tuesday both recommended I finish work due to SPD. I phone the GP surgery Tuesday morning and said I didn’t want to take up an appointment that could benefit someone else so could they ask the GP to telephone me to organise a sick note for work. Secretary said no need for phone call, note would be fine given my medical history and they would get the GP to sort it ASAP.

A week later it still isn’t done and I have work hassling me for me. AIBU fo think, that whilst I appreciate they are really busy, it shouldn’t take this long! If I had made an appointment to see the GP I would have been able to walk out of it with the note in my hand!

Have you tried calling to check what the hold up is?

I went in on Friday, they apologised and said it would be sorted for today. I phoned today at 5pm after hearing nothing to be told it still wasn’t done with another apology.

I’m going in tomorrow afternoon and if it still isn’t ready then I will insist on them making me a doctors appointment for the following day so I can get it done.

It’s just an extension of one from last week so literally needs printing and signing, couple of minutes job.

That's really annoying. I would be irritated too. Presumably, they are a bit overrun at the moment (it's the middle of flu season isn't it?) but that doesn't mean your needs change any. To be fair to the doctor, although the letter just needs printing out and signing, in order to sign it with integrity (and therefore not risk potential lawsuits/disciplinary/inability to sleep at night/etc. the doctor will still have to bring up your notes and look them over and check that the letter is correct. Which all takes time in order to ensure mistakes aren't made.

I think I’m more annoyed that I thought I was doing the right thing in not taking up an appointment that someone else might need. Next time I will just see the doctor myself as getting an appointment is always fairly straight forward.
