now! they're all hard as rocks and i always seem to miss the 1 hour when they're perfectly ripe. does this happen during the night?

They're bloody awful. They're only picked like that so the staff can throw them around without bruising them. We must be the laugh of teh sunny world, when they watch those bullets being shipped to us. Or maybe it's some kind of catharsis, and if we put with this hell for long enough, we'll end up somewhere people actually eat ripe fruit. I mean what other nation on earth willingly eats gooseberries, rhubarb and green quinces???

Oh to live near the Mediterranean.

duchesse · 04/07/2007 13:45

Ps: I read recently that pineapples NEVER ripen once they are picked, so no point buying them not ripe as they'll always be horrible.

There is just no excuse... but while people keeping buying them, shops will keep selling them. We should all complain all the time.

Whooosh · 04/07/2007 13:49

M&S sell ripened, ready to eat nectarines-not looked to see if they sell peaches the same way.

Expensive but at least you get to eat them-think you have to buy a tray of four though...

southeastastra · 04/07/2007 13:50

that makes sense duchesse. they're marked ready to eat but they are like bullets! tomorrow they'll be all soggy probably .

don't know if you're still interested but they're ripe today, 6 days later

it's the same with avocados. either too squishy or they never ripen...

3andnomore · 10/07/2007 21:08

lol...tis so annoying...nectarines, plums, peaches and avocadoes and also mangoes and papaya seem to be doing that to me...first blinking hard and suddenlt gone off, sigh!

I bought a punnet from Tescos the other day, they looked ok. 2 days later they were all mouldy and rotten apart from 2. Had to throw the rest out.

Sainsburys sell fruit like this and the buggers NEVER ripen. They go from bullets to a squashy mess over the week. There might be about 3 seconds where they are ripe but I've never witnessed it. I never buy the "ripen later" fruit anymore. Waste of money.

southeastastra · 11/07/2007 15:29

these were labelled as ready to eat haha. i'm going to write to my mp
