To think Sky TV are idiots

My DM's Sky box keeps over heating, she has been with them for 18 years!! they want £30 to send an engineer out, or £20 to send a new Sky Q box £20 to send an engineer to fit and £12 a month added to her bill for 18 months!!! She is already paying near enough £80 how the hell can she watch Sky that she pays for if her box keeps over heating and freezing!!

If I sign up today I get Sky q, £20 installation £22 a month for basic package.... is this some sort of joke or are they all just idiots ? And to top it of my SIL got a Sky q box for free and shes only been with sky a few years....

Don't know why I'm posting... probably to warn others to stay away from sky.

She needs to threaten to leave (or actually leave)

x2boys · 09/02/2019 19:26

Yes tell her I leave, when we left the offered us all sorts !

Seniorcitizen1 · 09/02/2019 19:27

Threaten to leave and they will waive all charges. When my contract comes to aned - TV and broadband - I do this and get a better deal

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 09/02/2019 19:27

Threaten to leave and to be put through to disconnections. They will discount it then when she gets out through.

Walnutwhipster · 09/02/2019 19:29

Tell her to go through to cancellations. I've never paid for an engineer or upgrade.

HJWT · 09/02/2019 19:31

Brilliant thanks guys!!

We very rarely pay full price for our sky, you will definitely need to ‘cancel’ someone rings to tempt you back. I think mse always have good threads on this.

HeyMicky · 09/02/2019 19:33

A charge for an engineer visit is not unreasonable - they're proving a service.

But if she wants a replacement, she needs to speak to cancellations. And she needs to say she's leaving something like 7 times before the discounts kick in

IndianaMoleWoman · 09/02/2019 19:34

Before you ring to threaten cancellation, find out what deals she could get with similar providers, eg Virgin, which will add more weight to your argument and make you seem like you genuinely are planning to leave because you’ve researched alternatives.

Hunter037 · 09/02/2019 19:35

She shouldn't be paying £80 a month for sky TV. We pay £30pm for TV, broadband, talk and boxsets. Just ring up every year and say its too expensive and you want to leave. They will usually offer a deal straight away or you can still cancel and then they will ring a few days later and offer an even better deal.

Unfortunately many of these companies don't reward loyalty any more. New customers get the best deals and existing customers get nothing because most will keep paying anyway.

theworldistoosmall · 09/02/2019 19:38

Yup she needs to tell them she is cancelling. I genuinely called to cancel they asked why, told them I'm using Netflix. They offered me free Sky Q, installation and would have paid £30 a month for the next year. Still didn't take the offer.

In the past, I have called to downgrade when I couldn't afford it, and again given amazing offers.

If she is in London she can have one of my old boxes.

Hunter037 · 09/02/2019 20:10

The other option is to buy a box second hand on ebay which will be much cheaper. Getting an engineer to install it is bollocks. If its an identical box you just uplug one and plug in another.

Hwory · 09/02/2019 20:16

The way that sky works is you own the box (but they give you it) and then you pay for the tv service through the box. This is a scheme so they don’t have to pay out for engineer visits or sending out a new box and they can charge for it.

If you call up and say well I can’t afford to fix/replace the box so I need the service cancelling they’ll waive the charges.

CF-ers they are.

cardibach · 09/02/2019 20:27

The fact that they produce all the offers when you say you will leave is the reason I left and will never return. I have Nowtv at £9.99 a month and Netflix at£7.99 a month. Get everything I want to watch.
