To cancel the day out with DC?

I arranged a special day out with DC (6) for today as we don't get much one on one time, doing two activities with a nice lunch inbetween. DH has just said the car is out of petrol so we'll need to go to fill up on the way there.

DC has been whining and crying saying he doesn't want to go and get petrol and he doesn't want to do activity 1 (which is already booked, I knew he was more excited about 2nd activity). He's whined and cried every day I've picked him up from school this week too even though we've had a few nice (non strenuous) things to do.

I just feel really fed up with all this whining and moaning and negativity, if he doesn't get exactly what he wants (including lots of goalpost moving) - even if he does get what he wants he'll find something to moan about. I'm naturally an optimist and find it really hard to deal with. We've played together a fair bit today and had laughs.

I'd never usually threaten anything but just said if the whining doesn't stop by the time I've got ready we'll not bother doing any of it. Now I feel really shitty and don't know how to come back from it and make sure we have a nice day.
