To think I am wasting everyone’s time

A year ago I reacted to a fried egg, I spoke to the go who said avoid eggs and take piriton. Despite being careful I have still had a reaction 5 or 6 times in the last year, the last time being Wednesday when I bought a prepackaged pasta salad, only thinking to check the ingredients when a minute or so after eating my lips swelled, I started wheezing and my throat swelled up, I also got hives. Each time I react it has got slightly worse. I took piriton and then felt like I needed to sleep all afternoon. I went to the gp yesterday to see what else I could take instead, prescribed an epi pen and told if I react again then I must use it and call an ambulance, I’ve also got a call today to be told I’ve beem referred to immunology.

Aibu to think I’m wasting everyone’s time and being a drama queen and I should just take antihistamines and put up with it?

I think you are allergic to eggs and should not eat them. It’s no joke and you should read labels carefully.

StormTreader · 08/02/2019 16:33

You have an actual allergy and you need to start taking it more seriously.
Eating food out and not even looking at the ingredients before eating it isn't anywhere near careful enough.
Allergic reactions can increase with each exposure so you really can't just assume that even if you have a reaction then you'll be ok because that may not be the case.

happilysinglemum · 08/02/2019 16:34

Thanks, I do avoid them but made a mistake, one occasion was cross contamination from someone else cooking.

Are you joking or being sarcastic? It’s hard to get tone online.

You do realize that allergies are cumulative, right? Every exposure means your body can react more intensely. You need to start being meticulous about avoiding your allergens and you need to follow up with the doctors.

EvaHarknessRose · 08/02/2019 16:34

I think you are being under-cautious and need to check packets more carefully and avoid prepared or takeaway food in case of mistakes.

Well, if you carry on with the attitude you have, that’s a great epitaph you’ve written out there!

Allergies can be serious. You’re not wasting anyone’s time when the next time it could make you seriously ill. You may have also developed other allergies you’re unaware of, and in the mean time stop bloody eating eggs.

Whatisthisfuckery · 08/02/2019 16:38

As PP have said, food allergies get worse each time. You need to start taking seriously. I’m not joking, it could actually kill you. The GP won’t refer nowadays unless it’s serious, so you need to attend your appointments and do what the doctors say.

BIgBagofJelly · 08/02/2019 16:39

Errrr YABVU. You're already having significant allergic reactions which are getting worse. You should follow the doctor's advice. Use the epic pen and call an ambulance if it happens again.

AngelaStorm73 · 08/02/2019 16:45

You need to start reading labels Hmm

picklemepopcorn · 08/02/2019 16:58

You need to consider only eating food you have prepared at home, for a while. This is serious, not a waste of time.

I promise you, using the epi pen and being blue lighted to hospital wastes far more time and resources. It also leaves you feeling like crap.

Learn about labels. Get proper support.

Aquamarine1029 · 08/02/2019 17:01

You need to take this allergy extremely seriously, because if you don't, worrying about being a "drama queen" will kill you.

ChristmasFlary · 08/02/2019 17:07

A colleague had an anaphylactic reaction whilst in work. Fortunately l work in a hospital theatre and found a Consultant Anaethetist. He RAN to get to her because it is truely that SERIOUS a condition.

You're now getting into the airway compromising stage. Do not be slack in checking what you are being exposed too as next time you might end up with a breathing tube being forcefully ramed down your throat as you turn blue.

Dramatic ...maybe.

Seen it happen...unfortunately yes

theworldistoosmall · 08/02/2019 17:18

I have an egg allergy. You need to take it very, very seriously and check everything. It's not about being a drama queen or wasting peoples time it's very serious.
You also need to be aware of the alternative names.
I am now at the point that I cannot come into contact with eggs. This was found out during a cooking lesson and I was blue lighted from the school I worked at.
You also have to be careful with some medication as well

AngelaStorm73 · 08/02/2019 17:39

I know some vaccines you can't have due to egg allergy, so worth asking them if you need a jab too

happilysinglemum · 08/02/2019 17:42

Thanks everyone, time to be more careful I think! Had thought it maybe wasn’t so serious as the gp (different one) that I saw last year just said take piriton. Medical records say no flu jab which I.would have had as I’ve also got asthma.

Allergies get worse with repeat exposure. From your username, it seems you are a single mum, so your child needs you. Don’t piss about. You need to take it really seriously.

picklemepopcorn · 08/02/2019 17:58

My mum tends to anaphylaxis. When she was stung by wasps recently, I gave her piriton and took her to hospital. It didn't develop into anaphylaxis, and the doctors said going straight in with piriton was the right thing to do.

Don't dismiss piriton, but recognise that it takes the edge off rather than anything else.

picklemepopcorn · 08/02/2019 17:59

There is nothing between antihistamine and epipen, from what I can tell, and epipen is not to be used lightly so it isn't the GP's first suggestion

AngelaStorm73 · 08/02/2019 18:22

Can you take an antihistamine and carry an Epipen?
