A colleague yesterday declared that if a girl wears a short skirt she puts herself 'at risk'. AIBU to think this is utter bollocks? I've slept on it and I am still fizzing.

Of course it's utter bollocks. A girl could walk down the street completely naked but that doesn't mean that men are obliged to attack her. Equally a women could walk down the street wearing a hoody and jeans and be assaulted. I think there was actually an art exhibit on this where the artist displayed what women were wearing when they were sexually assaulted. Generally it was very normal jeans, t shirt, hoody type combos.

Of course it’s rubbish. Most sexual assaults are perpetrated by people known to the victim for one thing, and even when the attacker is a total stranger skirts still have nothing to do with it. The only person ever responsible for a rape or sexual assault is the perpetrator.

TwitToWoo - I came home angry and explained to my dh why. He said that his POV was that twunt colleague wasn't victim blaming but expressing a concern. I contacted my line manager who put me off putting in a formal complaint as it could have been a 'poor choice of language'. Putting in a formal complaint is serious and, before I react angrily, I just wanted confirmation that im.not being overly sensitive. The two people I spoke to in rl didnt offer 100% backing of my reaction.

I grew up being told by my dad and stepmum that I was asking to be raped going out in a dress/short skirt/no bra. I think it’s just a hideous statement now as it was 20 years ago. Men are not so weak that the sight of a knee makes them have to attack someone. Formal complaint about the person who said it and a word I’m someones ear about the he manager that put you off doing it immediately xx

This view is insulting to men too (which is something which your prick of a colleague might care more about). My dog loves roast chicken, and if I’m eating some she might watch me, but she has never attacked me to get it. This statement suggests that men have less self control than dogs.
