To be so pleased Turing won icons *title amended as per OP's request'

I watched the imitation game a while ago and it made me cry.

So sad to think someone so brilliant was driven to suicide for being gay and being autistic.

I'm so pleased he won Icons tonight but so sad it feels too little too late - he isnt here to see that he is now accepted and hailed as the brilliant mind and man he was ☹️

Yes!! The wonderful, also autistic, Chris Packham making the case for him just made it all the more poignant. I didn’t even intend to watch it, just kind of on in the background, but very quickly got into it as I love every single person in he running. Turing is the worthy winner though, and I also voted for him to be on the new £50 note.

Me too. An utter genius who was completely ostracised. Maybe now he’ll get some of the wider recognition he deserves.

coppercolouredtop · 05/02/2019 22:11

I adore Chris Packham too. My eldest (ds) has Asperger syndrome. He battled right through school, finally being more accepted In college and uni.

I think that's why I got so invested!

INCREDIBLY chuffed about this. Grin

Great news!

NorthernLurker · 05/02/2019 22:14

I'm still pissed off the finalists were all men. Seriously, 'greatest' excludes women now?

newnameforthis7 · 05/02/2019 22:18

Agree .. Shame there aren't 2 'greatest icons.' Male and female.

BMW6 · 05/02/2019 22:20

Am really pleased Alan Turing won - thought Dr Martin Luther King was a shoo in.

BikeRunSki · 05/02/2019 22:22

@NorthernLurker, i’m dissapoibted too, and Claire Balding did talk about the lack of deal finalists, although there were women candidates in every category.

BMW6 · 05/02/2019 22:23

Well the public voted in each category, and a woman was represented in every category, and I believe most voters would be women........

Millionairesshortbread1 · 05/02/2019 22:30

So pleased, a well deserved winner.

coppercolouredtop · 05/02/2019 22:34

There were women nominated...but I would still have voted for Turin.

The women were were very worthy of winning too.

Craft1905 · 05/02/2019 22:36

Not sure what Turin has won, there are far nicer Italian cities.

Cheeringmeup · 05/02/2019 22:40

Craft1905
Florence is beautiful - and a lovely person too...

coppercolouredtop · 05/02/2019 22:43

Sorry Turing....
Fat fingers. Small phone.

AleFailTrail · 05/02/2019 22:44

Ahh all I could think was Turin the Doomed from the Silmarillion....Turing makes far more sense!

coppercolouredtop · 05/02/2019 22:44

Yes I'm utterly ashamed of my error and my sentiments clearly mean nothing now I've misspelled.

Should I ask hq to delete?

coppercolouredtop · 05/02/2019 22:54

Thanks I've reported. I don't want to take away from the achievement because I can't spell.

newnameforthis7 · 05/02/2019 23:06

rippednips · 05/02/2019 23:12

MNHQ, if you’re amending thread title could you maybe leave out the name completely as it’s a bit of a spoiler... I wasn’t planning on watching until tomorrow!

MyNameIsJane · 05/02/2019 23:15

It was an amazing supporting statement which Chris Packham gave.
