To be mad about getting tons of marketing phone calls that come to my house as a wrong number??

Since moving to this house far too long ago I have always been ex-directory so not had a problem with much telemarketing calls. Then I got a nectar card and cos you have to put your phone number, I started getting calls. I then registered with the telephone preference service and the calls stopped.
However RANT RANT RANT I am soo pissed off, for the last 3 months I get call after call, all from these foreign call centres, and what sounds like a lot of calls coming from india, for a family called Ahmed. I keep telling them its a wrong number and to take the number off their lists. I ask them for this family's address so I can go round and get them to do the telephone preference thing but am told they have client confidentiality issues!! I did try to use the call prevention service again but you have to put the address relating to the phone number and I don't know where these people live!!! I am so mad. I am self employed and some days work from home preparing training materials etc and I am mad mad mad everytime one of these calls comes - and I can't no answer my phone as it might be a work enquiry. GRRRRRRRR

Pretend you are the ahmeds and get confirmation of 'your' personal profile. can you get BT to help?

flibbertyjibbet · 03/07/2007 10:56

I tried pretending to be the Ahmeds but I need their address to progress anything! And the phone number is mine as far as BT are concerned so there was nothing they could do. I only know that these people are in the same town as me as one 'financial adviser' said he couldn't give me an address but did confirm the town. The cheeky caller just now listened to me ranting to get my number off their list then said 'yes I will do that but do you have two minutes for me to tell you about our ......' NOOOOOOOO!!!

Can you block overseas calls with BT? I'm guessing changing your phone number isn't an option since you need it for work.

flibbertyjibbet · 03/07/2007 11:00

I would not consider changing my phone number anyway, its some other idiots cock up. I have started to wonder if someone might have done it on purpose... not the Ahmeds, after all, they don't even know about it.
I need to calm down, I am ranting on another thread as well and from the other poster's responses am being completely irrational!! And I'm not getting any work done either!

Can't block overseas calls either as my 3 sisters all live abroad and I quite often hear from cousins in the states too.
I will ring bt and take it from there. in the meantime I will try not to shout at the telemarketing companies and see if, when I explain sweetly my predicament, if they will give me the ahmeds address so I can register as them on the call stopping thingy service.

the problem is that if someone opts their phone number into a marketing campaign (eg part of a competition) it over-rides the general tpelephone preference service rules. Sadly people sometimes give out a deliberately worng number so they don't get the call.

Also TPS doesn;t have jurisdiction over foreign call centres unless thay have an identifiable link to a UK company. Sorry.

I feel better already as I have just decided I could give out MILs phone number to some marketing campaigns... Not with my name on of course!
