To not pay these extra charges from the managing agents...

The company running our estate has changed and just before the old one was wound up there were lots of problems. We didn't receive some invoices and think there was an incorrect address on their system for a while and didn't even realise we hadn't received the bills.
So a new one takes over and sends a demand for a big amount. We ask for a breakdown and detail and then realise they are right, that the invoices were never received. We immediately pay the current bill and say can we pay the balance in installments and provide post dated cheques to cover off the full amount over the course of the next 10 months.
The answer is no, full amount or it goes to their solicitors. We can't pay full amount so solicitors letter is received. The first thing it says is they are happy to receive the balance of the debt in instalments but can it be done by bank transfer. We say yes, and switch to bank transfer (but they still cash the cheques as well).
Because of this the actual balance has now been repaid and then some... But the lease agents are saying we still have to pay their solicitors fees.
Am I right that I shouldn't have to pay it, because I offered to pay in installments before they incurred the solicitor cost who said to pay in installments?
They are threatening me with charges for more solicitor fees if I don't pay these extra fees.
I am fully up to date with the service charges as of May last year except for the amount they have added as their 'solicitor fees'.
Anyone know whats their next move - is it small claims court or would a lease issue/dispute end up in a different court?
If anyone can help its appreciated... x
