Which one is right when merging into lane?

I go down a similar road to this every day, and I usually do the car that's on the left, but then you got cars on the right also going into the same lane so I have to do treble mirror and blind checks to ensure it is clear! Which one would you do? Or is it both right?

Both right.

Are they merging off with the right lane going one way and left the other? Are they driving over raised hatches into your lane?

If there's nowhere else for them to merge before roads segregate then that's an awful and dangerous design.

If the roads stay in the same direction (unclear because hatches siggest they wouldn't) then they are merging far too soon.

You shouldnt drive over raised hatches though. I'd still.double/treble check just in case.

Dothehappydance · 24/01/2019 22:02

The right one is very close to the hatches so maybe they should wait until they are clear, I do a very similar manoeuvre, it really is just a case of checking everywhere and hoping everyone else is too.

Can't you just stay in the left hand lane of your road until the cars from the right have finished coming across? Or have i misread the diagram completely?

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 25/01/2019 07:06

@Not2BBs that's what I do. Before that, there's 3 lanes. I stay in the left lane and then merge into the lane like the car on the left.

There are roads similar to this in Derby and then you have people in the lane you’re trying to merge in to, trying to merge in to your lane (it’s just as confusing written down). It’s carnage.

swingofthings · 25/01/2019 07:11

The person who has right away is the person already on it, even further away, moving into it.

If you both happen to want to move into the lane at exactly the same level, both are responsible to avoid, however if the have to move in that lane to go in the right direction whereas you only want to get on the right hand lane to speed up, the right thing to do is wait until they've merged.

That reminds me of a nearby motorway junction where the merging on lane is also the lane to leave for the next junction immediately after. Absolute nightmare and whoever designed it was crazy!

From the diagram both cars are right, if that's the only place for the car on the right to join the lane you're entering. Its not good road design though!
