To think toasties/paninis should be toasted/griddled ?

Why do places now think sticking bread in a super fast oven makes a toastie? Or that putting fake lines on panini makes up for the fact they were heated in an oven?
I don't get it, the whole point of them is that the gooey middle contrasts with some crunch on the outside. Who are the people actually wanting soft warm bread sogginess?? Come and explain how you took over the world!

YANBU.

Out of lack of facilities, I just heated a cheese and ham sandwich in the microwave before.

Having a sandwich toaster was lifechanging.

BongoBingoBam · 23/01/2019 09:32

Toastie bags in the toaster are brilliant for this. I agree OP the oven ones are floppy and gross.

Notso · 23/01/2019 09:37

YABU Costa's cheese and tomato toastie is perfection.

Triskaidekaphilia · 23/01/2019 09:41

Are they merrychefs or something else? I find those get the outside quite crispy.

Lettherebelight · 23/01/2019 16:48

I don't know what merry chefs is. I've had these soggy monstrosities from Costa, a theatre cafe and m&s cafe in the last couple of weeks.

Tris, do you like actual toasted toasties?

Soggy, oven cooked toasties? What an utter abomination.

YANBU, @Lettherenelight - not even the slightest bit.

ErrorNoBrainDetected · 23/01/2019 17:50

If you have a George foreman that also makes a great toastie.

TeeBee · 23/01/2019 17:52

Urgh, those Costa toasties are grim. Agree with you OP. Trading standards needs to step up.

CurlyMango · 23/01/2019 18:17

Yup, Merrychefs. Microconvection ovens.

SideEyeing · 23/01/2019 18:24

I am so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. You are not being unreasonable. Caffe Nero are the only ones who still do a panini 'properly' and now that I'm not in London I rarely get to visit one!

Lettherebelight · 23/01/2019 19:02

The weird thing is that a normal griddle is as quick if it's left on (which is doable at lunch time) so I don't know what they gain

Will remember the cafe Nero tip though, thanks!

M&S toasties are amazing, the ones from the store near me are always crispy on the outside and melted cheesey goodness inside 😋

BeetlebumShesAGun · 23/01/2019 20:11

There are Caffè Nero’s all over. Even in my sleepy agricultural Midlands market town. They’re really not a London thing. Hmm
