WIBU to just chop my thumb off now?

I've had an ingrown and probably infected thumbnail for almost a week. I am not a stranger to pain but this is PISSING ME OFF. It's difficult to unbutton my jeans, turn the knob to adjust the heating in the car etc etc. I've soaked it in warm water and salt water, no difference. So does anyone have any clever solutions before chop the fucker off?

GP and antibiotics??? Before the nail falls off preferably!

If you've ever seen Evil Dead 2, you know to chop it off now and replace it with an adorable thumb chainsaw. Just be careful giving handjobs, capiche?

Go to the chemist for magnesium sulphate paste. Slather it on and wrap a silver backed plaster on it but not too tight. Leave it overnight. It will draw the pus out. Repeat for a couple of days if necessary.

Antibiotics!

User5trillion · 21/01/2019 22:06

What I do on my toe nails is this.... using little scissors chop a v out of the nail. You must go into the nail that covers pink bit, it really hurts. In a day the nail starts growing back together to correct the v and the pain eases.

OMGithurts · 21/01/2019 22:07

I need to go to the chemist tomorrow anyway because the eczema between my fingers is playing up (I've had a v bad week and it always breaks out with stress) (my hands are a mess!) So good to hear they might have something. Then if no joy I'll either phone the GP or watch Evil Dead 2 Grin

Magnesium sulphate paste is sometimes known as Drawing Paste.

When it's happened here, I've usually pierced the area with a sterile needle first to give the pus a way out, then applied the paste, then a plaster.

So YABU to chop it off - stab it a few times, cover it in goop and wait a bit, though, is NU.

For tonight you can do a home made pultis

Bit of bread with milk in the microwave to make a weetabix texture. Put it on the wound and cover with a dressing pad or folded tissue and bandage. Leave for as long as you can cope. Pulls the pus out.

Check the temp of the mixture before applying although I found the heat took my mind off the pain of the injury.

I have used this method for infected bites and cuts. Works well as a intermediary

To be honest OP I think what you really need to do is get over to Sporners Corner and post a photo.

OMGithurts · 22/01/2019 09:14

You sporners are strange people 😂 there's not much to see, it's just massive and red, although I have an ingrown fingernail on the other hand (less bothersome than the thumb) which is going a suspicious green colour round the edge.

The pharmacist took one look at it and has told me to get to the GP. Bit embarrassing going to the doctor with an ouchie thumb...

My DS has that- he constantly picks at his nail - most of his nail came off, and he was left with the thinnest layer of nail imaginable. He was so lucky that it's come back without a deformity - if the infection gets bad enough it can PERMANENTLY damage the nail bed, and the nail will then ALWAYS grow wonky.

SO GET YOUR BACKSIDE TO THE GO NOW!!!!!

OMGithurts · 22/01/2019 16:45

I got my backside to the GP who agreed that the finger had gone a suspicious green colour, and I now have a week of antibiotics. Which is good, because I felt quite ridiculous.

erm I came for a gross picture Blush

OMGithurts · 22/01/2019 16:51

Sorry, all the gross stuff is inside making my finger swollen and sore.

Get some hydrogen peroxide from chemist, dilute 4:1 and poke your thumb in it. It'll fuzz away if liquid can get to infection and clear up really quickly.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 22/01/2019 17:00

Use sugar soap and a plaster over your thumb that will draw the pus out. Hope you get your thumb sorted soon OP.

EhlanaOfElenia · 22/01/2019 19:28

Good! Hopefully as the nail grows you won't have done damage, but it will take awhile to tell. You might have some of the nail flake off so be careful. (And that would be a gross picture, but not necessarily a sporner one!)
