I’ve been contemplating and one of my faves.

Billy and Fen. Just before they get it together and she’s wearing a pink panther nightie.

Oh to be that looked after.

I also love the "pleasure launch of hoorays" wrecking Piggy Porkers birthday!

And "Archie! Drop!"

Oh, and Taggie worrying about her dress dancing with Henry- he'll discover a motto and a hat in a minute!

ReanimatedSGB · 19/01/2019 19:01

I loved Lizzie and Freddie getting it together as well. Also, Perdita was a cow but I thought it came across quite well that a lot of that was because her adoptive father was such a self-righteous prick, and that she had to learn to forgive and understand her mum.

And The Common Years is one of my favourite books; bits of it still make me well up. I wanted to live that sort of life - being a writer with endless parties and mischief and a lovely house in the suburbs. Let's say I didn't quite manage it...

CatherineMaitland · 19/01/2019 19:09

Ahhhh adore Imogen. How lovely is Matt and how awful is Nicky? And the horrid vicar father and the cool younger brothers and sister?

"Yvonne Bismarck" too. :-))))

Cameron had a shit childhood as well, let's not forget, and then got beaten up the evil Tony. So if we can understand Perdita I think we can understand her too.

Always wanted a future glimpse of Chessie and Red, no doubt making each unhappy and having no money, unless Grace happened to die and leave everything to Red.

Agree about the awful foursome - can't read it now without a shudder.

BestIsWest · 19/01/2019 19:13

I also adore The Common Years. I may have google street viewed Egliston Road and tried to work out which was Jilly’s house and looked at her routes across the Common.

EeeSheWasThin · 19/01/2019 19:30

Bestiswest I think we may have compared notes about doing that before 😉

BestIsWest · 19/01/2019 19:55

Eee we did, I remember Grin!

bookworm14 · 19/01/2019 20:01

In Rivals when Venturer win the TV franchise after assuming it’s hopeless.

In Appassionata when Marcus leaves his hospital bed to go back to the piano competition and ends up winning despite Rannaldini’s attempted sabotage. And the bit when he reconciles with Rupert after coming out as gay (sob). I love Marcus.

EeeSheWasThin · 19/01/2019 20:11

Best not stalkerish at all 😂

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/01/2019 20:14

I started reading "Wicked" but I cannot remember if I finished it ( I was a bit Hmm that they were all having sex at 13/14 and Heingis was playing away)

Started 'Jump' but couldn't be arsed finishing it (the racehorse one)

I have read the thread about 'Mount' loads of references to Buttercunt but no one explained what it was , so Imay have to search this up.

Oh , the bit about "Tero" , Perdita's tiny grey polo pony that Red rode in the match Sad

Chewinggumwalk · 19/01/2019 21:09

70 - it’s something one character says to another during sex. I won’t say who in case it spoils it for you! Urgh!!

littlemissmanchet · 19/01/2019 21:32

I love the Flora/George scenes, particularly where she drops the brandy in the street

It's all good clean Fundador!

The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous is my all-time fave, also love Polo and Appassionata to distraction. Also really enjoyed, Score! - which I didn't think I would. 'Tyrant's been toppled!'

And Chesty - can't believe I remember this but the shaved legs at the tennis match was Rachel Levtisky being mocked for actually shaving when she's usually a proudly hairy eco-warrior queen.

IJustLostTheGame · 19/01/2019 21:38

Lady waterlane on being questioned as to whether or not it was worth risking a marriage over 9 inches of angry gristle.
Her reply was that his gristle wasn't angry and that it was considerably more than 8 inches.
Polo was the best.

RitaFairclough · 19/01/2019 21:48

I like Caitlin and Archie getting pissed on the train. And Lizzie Vereker’s child saying “I saw Freddie bare...” I like all the kids actually. I like when Isa tells Jake to “get pissed up” and when Tabitha eats her Easter eggs early and says “flappy oyster” to disapproving Helen.

And as a journo I like everything Janey. I like when she is sweating over her typewriter in the garden.

ReanimatedSGB · 19/01/2019 21:52

I was a bit surprised that Janey got hated on so much in the later books TBH. In Rivals/Riders she was a bit of a mess but 'naughty and fun'; by Jump she'd become this evil selfish bitch who everyone hated. Because in the early books she always seemed to me to be a bit of an author avatar.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/01/2019 22:06

I searched it up Chewing , I was ver' ver' disappointed it was so lame (I thought he was shagging her with a half pound block of Lurpack or something Grin Bit like a famous Rock Star and the Mars Bar )

I love reading all the Christmases in JC stories

They all wear Man-Tan
Have sexy gap tooth smiles
Navy blue sheets
Wear Fracas perfume
Go off their food with grief and drop 20lb in a week
Let their animals sleep in their beds
Stop traffic in the main road/M1 trying to persuade little injured ogs out from under cars (like the little dog (Little Chef) Perdita rescued and Ricky took under his wing )

Percy11 · 19/01/2019 22:14

Prudence and Ace

maras2 · 19/01/2019 22:21

When Maude walks in to Taggy's house and sees Rupert painting her vulva with olive oil Blush

Thisnamechanger · 19/01/2019 23:07

Yvonne Bismarck

Id forgotten about that!

BestIsWest · 19/01/2019 23:15

The Iron Puke!

Susiesoop · 19/01/2019 23:17

Ah need to re-read them all! As an unglamorous, very non-posh teen they were my passport to another world. I loved that Daisy was a bit chubby and remember they all drink gallons of pouilly-fume. That stuck with me, and years later when i was in a smart restaurant I took great pleasure in ordering it despite not knowing how to pronounce it 😂. It was delicious and I will forever have a sofy spot for it!

friskybivalves · 19/01/2019 23:20

Cable's real name being Enid Sugden. 'Purple sprouting Brocklehurst'.

And when the waste paper bin sets on fire. Ace telling jack - quick, throw your coat on it. Jack protesting, 'why not your coat? Mine's just back from the cleaners'. Still makes me laugh.

Realising she should never have fallen for Pendle - the red flag was there when she found a half eaten chocolate bar in his driver's door. Anyone with that amount of self-restraint was obviously a wrong 'un.

User12879923378 · 19/01/2019 23:31

I would love to meet Jilly but would have to lose about five stone first because despite being superficially kind about chubsters in her books I've yet to read an interview with her where she hasn't said something cutting about the pleasingly plump

Beeziekn33ze · 19/01/2019 23:43

Lovely thread, I may start reading all the books again.
I liked Jake and Tory in the the stable, Tommy the groom and a very desirable jockey.
Sad about Ricky's little boy and Taggie's brave dog.
There was a nasty group sex thing in a Stratford hotel when people ganged up on Sampson's teenage granddaughter. Also unpleasant when Dora investigates the paedophiles in Wicked.
I'm still waiting to find out who the gorgeous and talented foundling Paris Alvaston really is and the significance of his Eiffel Tower snow globe.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 19/01/2019 23:45

The clothes are all amazing - Cameron’s smoking jacket and Octavia’s chain mail at a very straight party, and Abby wearing a turban! And the animals - Tero makes me cry buckets, and so does Gertrude!

Gareth telling Octavia that he will beat her when he feels like it is appalling though, plus the foursome rape and the underage shagging in the school one is so gross.

Beeziekn33ze · 19/01/2019 23:49

User12879923378 - don't worry, I, a chubster, met her once at a rather quiet signing in WHS (remember them?) and was unexpectedly enfolded in a pale blue cashmere hug. She's lovely and has replied to cards which I find amazing.
